Diamond. Common trade good (gemstone), 200 gp. Diamond is glistening transparent gemstone notable for its mysterious magical properties, aesthetic beauty, and seemingly supernatural hardness. Because a diamond or diamond dust must be consumed several powerful life-giving or life-preserving spells, like resurrection, it is one of the most valuable substances by its weight in the world despite being less rare than other gemstones. In some cultures diamond jewelry also has particularly powerful spiritual meaning, as it symbolizes life or eternity.
While diamonds are extremely hard, they are also exceptionally brittle. It is virtually impossible to deform a diamond, as instead of deforming as steel or even other gemstones might, the diamond will sooner break or shatter than change its shape. A diamond can cut steel, steel can smash a diamond. Diamonds are thus rarely useful for industrial or martial applications over less expensive materials. Instead, the most legendary of smiths use diamonds as a component when hoping to create adamantite, a material so rare and powerful it is often thought to be mythical.
Gemstone Carats. A gemstone's mass is measured it carats, with each carat equaling 0.2 grams. A 1 carat diamond typically costs 200 gp. Due to the nature of gemstones, larger diamonds are exponentially more expensive. Each increase of a whole carat doubles the price. A 2-carat diamond for example costs 400 gp. A 3-carat diamond costs 800 gp, a 4-carat costs 1600 gp, and a 5-carat costs 3200 gp. Any diamond of more than 5 carats is so rare it is a mystic item that cannot normally be bought or sold during downtime. Regardless of carats each gem is very small, so up to a thousand gemstones (or coins) of any size count as only one item in your bag.
