The Feyborn[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

History[edit]

When a child is borne from the schemes of an infernal being, a Tiefling is born. Whenever a child is blessed by the Upper Realms, an Aasimar is created. Sometimes, however, desperation drives two loving individuals into seeking other means to receive the blessings of fertility and children. Whenever those means result in the formation of a pact with a higher being of the Feywilds, such as a fey lord or lady, sometimes the parents are gifted with a child bearing the wondrous and often mischievous blessings of the Fey. Known fittingly as "Feyborn", these individuals bear some resemblance to the hopeful couple that begged for a child of their own - however, in the trickery of the Fey magics that aided in their conception, they possess physical traits that forever mark them as being a Fey.

These physical features include: a face with feline-like features; sharp teeth; and a deer-like tail. Most feyborn also have furry legs akin to satyrs - but instead of ending in cloven hooves, these individuals have fuzzy thick-soled feet with small toe-claws. Finally, Feyborn have a single pair of small, nub-like horns that develop just above their brows as they mature.

These physical features - blessings to some, curses to others in the eyes of these couples and their villages - forever mark the child as being the result of a pact made in desperation. Though many of these couples treat their children with love and tenderness regardless of these features, there are inevitably others that cast the child out into the elements. Often times, the Fey step into our realm and collect these abandoned children - raising them within the Feywilds as one of their community. The physical peculiarities of Feyborn do not stop at simply bestial traits, however. Upon a Feyborn child maturing into a young adult, their bodies cease showing any signs or detriments of aging. Often these individuals are forced to watch their parents and other friends and loved ones age and grow decrepit around them. Because of this, Feyborn often find solace within Elvish communities - seeking comfort among a people as equally capable of living for several centuries as they are. Others seek out the Feywilds of their own accord after little more than a century as the weight of remaining forever youthful in an aging world becomes too difficult to bear.

Those that come to terms with their longevity are often able to assimilate into communities that accept individuals of various lineages, such as many major cities or trade communities, and many tend to find comfort and companionship in other races that are often outsiders, such as tieflings and aasimar, or even half-orcs and half-elves. Those that go on to have families of their own often find their Fey blessings are not passed on to the next generation, for better or for worse. Perhaps the Fey, with all their tendency for tricks and deception, thought it merciful to allow these marked children to pursue normal lives. Or perhaps they simply did not want their gifts to so easily inherited. Whatever the reason may be, Feyborn continue to draw fascination - and sometimes mistrust and ire - in whatever community they find themselves.

Society[edit]

The Feyborn do not have a societal structure that is unique to themselves. Even their names are often given following their parental races' traditions and conventions. Individuals that were raised within the Feywilds - either after being abandoned by their parents for their physical differences, or choosing to seek out the wilds after maturing - are most often regarded as simply another member of their community; whichever that may be. Those that are raised as part of the mortla plane, among families and communities accepting of their unique differences and abilities, however, are as varied as the different races that make up those communities. Like other 'outsider' races, such as tieflings or half-elves, a Feyborn individual may assimilate themselves into the culture and community of their parents' race or another race altogether. These individuals often lead lives as varied as any natural member of those communities, or seek out lifestyles that compliment the blessings their unique lineage affords them.

Feyborn find comfort among fellow outsider races, and a sense of stability or permanence among other races with longevity, while those with shorter lifespans often find a Feyborn to be particularly interested in their lives - often encouraging them to live in the moment or appreciate the finer aspects of life because of this shorter time they have to enjoy it. Some Feyborn can remain sort of detached, however - a reluctant sort that hesitates to form lasting bonds and connections that they might naturally outlive and have to watch come to an eventual end. While they aren't a populous race, it isn't surprising to find one or two Feyborn individuals every now and again throughout many different types of communities for these different reasons.

Many individuals underestimate a Feyborn's true age, in part due to their unchanging youthful appearance, but also due to the almost childlike sense of curiosity and enjoyment they can experience when following their passions or pursuing leisurely activities of their enjoyment.

Feyborn Traits[edit]

  • Ability Score Increase: You may increase one ability score of your choice by 2, and a two different ability scores by 1 each.
  • Age: Feyborn mature at the same rate as other members of their natural lineage (ie. a Feyborn with human parentage would mature in their late teens, etc.). Due to the magical nature of their conception, however, a Feyborn ceases to show the physical signs or experience the negative effects of aging once they have physically matured. This does not stop them from still being able to be magically aged, however. Feyborn are capable of living for several centuries, with some of the eldest recorded individuals reaching nearly five centuries before peacefully passing away in their sleep one day.
  • Alignment: Almost every Feyborn is innately drawn to and embraces the chaotic nature of the freedom-loving Fey. Most individuals live their lives without much regard for good or evil; though there are some that enjoy helping others and performing acts of good and a small number, while rare, adopt more malicious tendencies.
  • Size: Feyborn often take after their natural parentage in terms of height and weight, though many tend to be slimmer built than usual. Your size is Medium or Small (your choice, depending on your character's parentage).
  • Speed: With their bestial legs, Feyborn are adept at quickly covering larger distances. Your walking speed is 35 feet.
  • Creature Type: You are a Fey.
  • Dreamtrance: Whenever you take a long rest, you may instead choose to enter a trance-like state. During this time, illusory butterflies flutter around you and fade in and out of visibility. You are considered incapacitated and unaware of your surroundings, as your mind slips into pockets of the Feywilds, a realm of pure emotional energy and magic. You spend a minimum of four hours in this trance-like state, after which you awaken and receive the benefits of completing a long rest.
  • Reveler: Much like their satyr brethren, nature draws Feyborn to be naturally receptive to creativity and expression. You have proficiency in Performance and Persuasion, as well as one musical instrument of your choosing.
  • Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common, Sylvan, and one other language that you and your DM deems appropriate for the character.
