Introduction[edit]

Adventure Background[edit]

The players arrive at Uma village, a small fishing village next to a good-sized river. Their harvests of salmon and cod are going down, and they feel as though something is causing this.

Overview[edit]

The village, then heading upstream where a lot of the fish live, and the battle between the creatures causing it. There are three locations in this adventure:

  • Uma Village
  • Trek upstream
  • Uma Lake

Hook[edit]

The most common is there being a job request, but other hooks may be used at the DM's discretion. Perhaps the party stopped at a tavern because they heard of their delicious salmon fillet, but there is little fish, and are given the place by the bartender. Whatever you choose, just about anything will work.

The Quest[edit]

Part 1. Uma Village[edit]

Uma Village

Uma Village has a population of about 100 commoner NPCs. The village elder is named Talos, a wise old human male. The village mainly consists of small wooden buildings with thatched roofs, surrounding a central town square. There is one larger building that serves as the town hall and inn. The salmon and cod fishing trade keeps the village prosperous. With the decline in fish, people are getting worried.

The players arrive at the village after accepting a quest that was posted on the job board at a tavern or the like. They hear Uma's plight and may feel conditioned to help, being rewarded handsomely by the end of this. They are being offered 100 gp per party member to deal with the problem. a successful DC 15 Charisma (Persuasion) check can elevate the payment to 150 gp.

Example text to read to the players:

As you approach Uma Village, you see simple thatched roof buildings surrounding a modest town square. The villagers eye you cautiously as you enter, but you are greeted by an elderly human male who introduces himself as Talos, the village elder.

"Well met travelers! Welcome to our humble home of Uma, yes indeed! I take it you are here about the job request we posted? Our village relies on the salmon and cod from the river don't you know, but they have declined greatly this season, oh my! We fear something sinister may be interfering with the fish upstream. Please, come to the town hall tonight for a feast, and we can discuss this further, yes we can!"

That evening at the town hall, Talos addresses you over dinner:

"Thank you again for coming, kindly travelers. This salmon shortage threatens our village's prosperity it does! We can offer 100 gold pieces to each of you if you investigate the source of the problem upriver and deal with it, oh my! I beg you to aid us in this time of need, yes indeed!"

Inhabitants[edit]

All Uma Village inhabitants are Commoners.

Part 2. Trek Upstream[edit]

After departing Uma Village, you follow the river upstream through the dense pine forest. The sound of the flowing water mixes with birdsong and the wind in the trees.

The players must follow the river's trek, following it until arriving at the lake.

  • The trek follows along the riverbank through the forest. It takes about half a day's travel to reach the lake.
  • The forest consists of tall pine trees, with some fallen logs and large boulders scattered about.
  • For random encounters, have creatures emerge from the treeline or from behind cover.

Inhabitants[edit]

While the players follow the trek, roll on the random table below. Repeat this during the trek 3 times in total. If Jim does not appear in the first two encounters, he is guaranteed to appear in the third.

Random Encounter Table: D6

1= Poisonous snake
2= 2 Poisonous snakes
3= Giant Wolf Spider
4-5= Shallow Wave Stalker
6= Jim Fischer
Jim Fischer

Jim is an inhabitant of Uma Village, and the inventor of the BackTank. He is friendly towards the adventurers. A conversation with him will reveal that a Giant Shallow Wave Stalker have appeared upstream, in the lake, and he assumes that monster is the cause for the reduction in fishes for the villagers.

Example introductory text to read when encoungering Jim Fischer:

A man emerges from the treeline and approaches you. He is a slender human male in his 40s, with disheveled brown hair and a scruffy beard. He wears studied leather armor and a large backpack that resembles a glass tank filled with water. Swimming inside the tank is a small lobster-like creature. "Greetings folks! Jim Fischer at your service. I hail from Uma Village as well. What brings you so far upriver?"

If the players explain their quest:

He nods knowingly. "Ah yes, I had a feeling you were on your way to deal with our fish problem. I reckon that giant shallow wave stalker in the lake ahead is causing us grief."

If the BackTank comes up:

Jim goes on to explain his theory about the creature. "I created the BackTank you see on my back to carry around my pet stalker, little Tim. He walks so slowly on land, the tank helps him keep up. Now every family in Uma Village has one to carry their fish and stalkers around! Well, best of luck to you! I should be getting back home. Do take care fighting that beastie in the lake!"
Developments[edit]

After interacting with Jim Fisher, the players can end their journey, arriving at Uma Lake.

Part 3. Uma Lake[edit]

The characters finally arrive at a Uma Lake, that serve as the source for the river that crosses Uma Village. The lake is not too deep, and a medium character can walk on the lake's floor.

Example text to read out:

After several hours of hiking along the river, the trees open up ahead of you, revealing a large, placid lake fed by a waterfall - you've reached Uma Lake. The pristine blue-green waters are still and calm, surrounded by towering pines. Across the lake you can make out a large rocky outcropping jutting up from the center of the water.
Inhabitants[edit]

A giant shallow wave stalker rests on a rock that emerges from the center of the lake. If the monster notices the players approaching, he will swim down to the lake, and wait them enter the water to attack. The battle will incurs the risk of attracting regular shallow wave stalkers. For each turn of combat, roll a d8. On a 7-8, a shallow wave stalker appears from the river entering the lake, and joins the initiative order, acting right after the Giant Shallow Wave Stalker.

Treasure[edit]

In the stone in the middle of the lake, there are the half eaten carcass of the last mercenary the villagers hired to kill the monster. Beneath his body, a successful CD 11 Intelligence (Investigation) check will reveal a +1 longsword. Beneath the water, a CD 14 Intelligence (Investigation) check or Wisdom (Perception) check will reveal a BackTank in the lake floor.

Conclusion[edit]

The town has a celebration and throws a feast with their new catch of salmon and stalker meat.
