Staff, Artifact (requires attunement by a creature with a minimum Wisdom or Intelligence score of 16)

The Staff of Ways is a mighty artifact created by the Foreclaimer Hybrid known as Ea the Mad and is the product of many years of research and labor. Though it may have the appearance of just another fancy staff, any mystically attuned being can sense the powerful magical presence emanating from it. It bears many ornate yet unfamiliar runes all along its mahogany surface, and has two black crystals at each end, with the larger of the two marking the front. Even when no one is attuned to it, it hums with a sort of unknowable intelligence, causing many to grow wary of its presence after prolonged exposure. When a creature does attune to it, it becomes even more embellished, its carvings becoming gilded and its crystals gaining a small white light at each of their centers.

Minor Traits[edit]

Withold and Recall. You cannot be disarmed of the Staff of Ways unless you are incapacitated. If it is on the same plane of existence, you can summon that weapon as a bonus action on your turn, causing it to teleport instantly to your hand. If it is k another plane of existence, it will take 1d4 + 2 turns to return to you.
Chosen One. When the creature attuned to the Staff of Ways dies, it will draw itself to the closest person who meets its attunement requirement. If no creature within 200 feet meets the requirement, it will fly off on its own to find someone worthy of its power, even if it must cross planes to do so.

Major Traits[edit]

Variable Size. As an action, you may shrink the Staff of Ways down to the size of a dagger. You may return it to its original size later as another action. Whilst in this state, it can be used as a spellcasting focus for Artificers, Warlocks, Sorcerers, and Druids. You cannot use any of the Staff's other major traits when it is in this state.

The Staffheads. The Staff of Ways has to ability to power a number of magical objects, each with its own unique abilities and effects. To connect to a staffhead, you need only say its name whilst holding the staff in one hand and the staffhead in the other. To disconnect the staffhead, you only need to will it. The Staff of Ways can only be connected to one staffhead at a time. You can store any of your staffheads in an infinite nondimensional space within the staff. Later you can, as a bonus action, either take out one stored staffhead or replace the one already out. When you replace a staffhead, you instantly disconnect the stored one and connect the one brought out without needing to say its name.

Ego Immemorial. When someone who is attuned to the Staff of Ways dies, their soul is absorbed into the staff. When this happens, they are able to imbue the staff with their power. They can imbue the staff with any spell or class feature that they have access to based on their level at the time of their death. They cannot imbue the staff with any spell or class feature that already exists within the staff. The staff can cast any held spells without requiring components, and can activate any class feature with a temporary effect without requiring any of the class' personal costs, such as Ki. Any creature who wishes to activate any held feature with passive benefits must spend a short or long rest focused only on the staff to activate it. They can activate a number of passive features equal to their Intelligence modifier.
