Barbarian Subclass
Twisted by volatile chemicals and ruthless experimentation, Crazy of Zaun barbarians are living weapons shaped in the depths of alchemical labs. Their rage is not just fury—it’s a violent reaction, mutating their bodies in unpredictable and terrifying ways.
As their muscles warp and toxins flood their veins, these warriors blur the line between man and monster, unleashing unstable power with every heartbeat.
When you create your Crazy of Zaun barbarian, you can choose one or more of the mutations below, or roll randomly from the table. These changes are merely aesthetic, having no mechanical effects.
d8 | Mutation Description |
---|---|
1 | Your skin bubbles and hisses, oozing green fluid from your pores. |
2 | One of your eyes glows with a sickly violet hue, darting wildly as if independent of your control. |
3 | Your veins pulse visibly beneath your skin, glowing bright neon blue. |
4 | You grow temporary bone spikes from your forearms and spine. |
5 | Your voice deepens and layers with distortion, echoing strangely with a metallic tone. |
6 | Your blood becomes black and smokes on contact with air. |
7 | A second heartbeat erupts in your chest. |
8 | You hear whispers in your mind. |
- Chemrage
When you choose this subclass at 3rd level, your rage is fueled by mutagenic chemicals that surge through your body, altering your physiology. When you enter a rage, you can choose one of the Chemtech Mutations below, lasting for the remainder of the rage:
- Toxic Veins. When a creature hits you with a melee attack, they take poison damage equal to your Rage additional damage
- Unstable Growth. Your muscles distort. You become Large, and your reach increases by 5 feet. Non-magical clothes and armor are torn and ripped apart. You can't use this mutation if the space doesn't allow for the growth.
- Chem-Fog Pulse. As a bonus action, you release a burst of toxic gas. All creatures within 5 feet must make a Constitution save (DC = 8 + your proficiency + your Constitution modifier) or be poisoned until the end of your next turn.
- Monstrous Fortitude
Starting at 6th level, you gain resistance to acid and poison damage, and advantage on saving throws against being poisoned. While raging, you gain immunity to poison and acid damage and to the poisoned condition.
- Unstable Surge
Also at 6th level, your chemical makeup destabilizes under stress. When you drop to half your hit points or fewer while raging, you must roll on the Instability Table as volatile mutagens surge through your body.
d6 | Effect |
---|---|
1 | Adrenaline floods your system. Take one additional action this turn (Dash, Disengage, or make one weapon attack). |
2 | Your cells knit themselves rapidly. You gain hit points equal to 1d10 + your Barbarian level. |
3 | You erupt in a toxic blast. Each creature within 5 feet takes 2d6 acid damage. DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus to halve the damage. |
4 | Your nerves misfire. You have disadvantage on all attack rolls and Dexterity checks until the end of your next turn. |
5 | Your body convulses violently. You fall prone and is incapacitated until the end of your next turn. |
6 | Lights, sounds, and smells hit you like a hammer. You are blinded and deafened until the end of your next turn. |
- Adaptive Mutation
At 10th level, your chemtech core adapts mid-battle. When you take damage from a creature, you may use your reaction to change your mutation to another available choice from your Chemtech Mutation options.
- Overdose
At 14th level, you unleash the full might of your mutation. As a bonus action while raging, you can enter an Overdosed state for 1 minute:
- You can choose two Chemtech Mutation effects to be active, instead of one.
- You can choose to activate an effect from your instability table at the start of each turn.
- If the Unstable Surge is involuntarily triggered, you can roll two d6s and choose the result.
The first time you activate Overdose, no drawback is triggered. Each time you use this feature thereafter, you suffer 1 level of exhaustion.
