Origins[edit]

This comes from the rivers Acheron( "river of woe") and Phlegethon ("flaming river") from Greek mythology. In the latter, sinners who were exposed to the water were condemned to suffer in boiling/flaming water. In Dante's Inferno, it is said to be a river that boils men's souls. The animated Disney movie version of Hercules was another source (it hurts for him to put his hands in a swirling pool of green water in the underworld.) Noname 12:20, 23 December 2007 (MST)
