About the change in the feature spread[edit]

Sup dude. I disagree with the statement that having fighting style at 2nd level frontloads the class. Paladins and rangers gain fighting style, on top of spellcasting at 2nd level. Also 7th level is the standard for Evasion, i see no reason to delay it to 13th level. Anastacio (talk) 19:19, 24 October 2021 (MDT)

My Design Philosophy for the Placement of Evasion and Fighting Style[edit]

Dang that was fast, My reasoning behind delaying fighting style and evasion was that they were never primary features of the class that I would deem necessary for it's main function which would be the companion and the hunter's hatred. I considered them solid features that complemented it however. I do concede 7th level did seem a touch late for fighting style, although I'm not sure there's a better place for it. I stand by 2nd level feeling too frontloaded for it as While a ranger has spellcasting and fighting style at 2nd level, this has spellcasting, a solid companion, and the extra damage that comes with hunter's hatred. And Extra attack fills the gap at 5th level. Evasion I feel sits pretty well at 13th as the ranger achieves it as an option at 15th level in an archetype. 7th level is when rogues obtain evasion, which is a class feature that fits rogues very well. Oh and Exceptional Training adds nothing as it's already worded in the companion.--Kermon (talk) 19:39, 24 October 2021 (MDT)

My counter argument is that a martial class need a reliable combat boost, something it can use consistently. This class have two combat resources: spells and hatred. Hatred work circumstantially, since you are not guaranteed to face your enemy, while spells...well, they end. Fighting style would be a good way to give a combat edge to this martial class on other situations early on.
On evasion, although you are right that Hunter gain evasion at 15th level, you must also recognize that is a weak option when you can also choose to gain Uncanny Dodge on the same level. Evasion is a great feature, but also circumstantial. At 7th level would be perfect, since is the level that Dex saves appear more often. At 13th level is far too late, since you don't spend most of a campaign playing at higher levels, and also you already gain spell slots at 13th level, so you don't even need to give another feature.
For exceptional training, yeah, is my fault for being lazy and don't reading carefully the hatred feature, it was dumb of me adding that, hehe. Either way, those are my points, and either way you take them, i'm happy that you were willing to discuss :) Anastacio (talk) 12:14, 25 October 2021 (MDT)

I mean I'm willing to accept criticism, and I have to agree that they are probably a bit late in progression where they're currently placed. I'm thinking of moving fighting style to 4th level where the only other feature is an ability improvement, and where it should be more consistently available. Evasion can probably be moved up as well to 9th as 13th gives a new spell level and a dice bump from hatred and at 9th it should be a bit more consistently available throughout play. Thanks for helping improve the class. --Kermon (talk) 18:16, 26 October 2021 (MDT)

Glad you too the advice! But, this have left you with a dead 7th level. If you don't want to give evasion at 7th level, why don't you put temporary hatred there? Anastacio (talk) 18:45, 26 October 2021 (MDT)

Yeah, I was looking at that, given my argument putting temporary hatred to fill that out should work better. --Kermon (talk) 18:54, 26 October 2021 (MDT)
