Talk:Arcane Explosion (5e Spell)

This spell is strictly better than Fireball and it scales in a manner better than fireball...so shouldn't it be 4th level, at least? Notice that vitriolic sphere, which is also better than Fireball because it uses the less reesisted acid damage type (A) *is* 4th level and (B) uses a d4 for its base damage with a possible second round kicker.

Because this spell uses two far less resisted damage types (and I'm not aware of any creature than resists them both, so it's always partially effective in a way that a single damage type spell would not be depending on the opponent), I would consider leaving the spell at this level, but making the base damage 8d4 (or even 6d6), with an additional d4 of a damage type of your choice per level. If that isn't sexy enough, then you could add a reasonable secondary effect on top of the 8d4, like it also causes a Wild Surge that affects any target that fails the save. Wild Surge is good, because it's not necessarily bad for the target, and so not overtly overpowering, and it definitely fits the theme.

Alternately, I'd make it a 4th level spell, as it is certainly fine as a 4th level spell, I think.

As stated above, the spells damage is balanced off fireball, which as a spell is stated to not be used as a means of balancing, since it doesn't abide by the spell creation guidelines in the DMG due to being an iconic spell. Even as a 4th level spell it comes off too strong due to the forced movement, explosive objects, and rare damage types. Additionally the wording on the object push and the creature push don't align, creatures are pushed away from the center of the spell, while it states that objects are pushed away from -you- the caster. The push descriptions should be aligned.
The addition of the ritual tag is also out of place on such a spell as this, and should really be removed.--Kahz (talk) 04:28, 9 October 2016 (MDT)
