balancing[edit]

to balance this race, i think you should just think about the basic human race: you add wings, so you delete the human bonus feat and the bonus skill point. well, your balancing of the stats is good. Forget about the odd things you did with the two handed weapons: you will have a class for that.

About the speed: why 25 feet and the medium armor thing ? You should forget this kind of custom rules...

I would add the -2 intelligence and inborn skill. The compensation for that could be some improved flying skill (for example, he could be able to fly even with strong winds)

How i see it:

  • +2 Strength, +2 Charisma, -2 Dexterity, -2 Intelligence, -2 Wisdom
The Accipiter are strong and charismatic warriors, but they lack a powerful sense of constraint, especially in battle, and their great size prevents them from being agile.
Accipiter are mostly like Humans who happen to possess wings.
An Accipiter receives no bonus or penalty for being Medium.
  • Accipiter base land speed is 30 feet: Fly Speed 45 feet. Accipiter can fly even with strong winds, as they live in mountains.
  • Inborn Skill: An Accipiter is very talented and gains 4 extra skill points at first level. They also gain one extra skill point at every level past 1st.
  • Automatic Languages: Corivair, Common. Bonus Languages: Dwarven, Elven, Goblin, Giant, Sylvan, Orc.
  • Favored Class: Paladin.
Couple of minor things. Flight speed is listed but flight maneuverability is missing (poor, average good etc.) and there needs to be an ECL on this. The stats even out but the flight speed and allowing them to use a two handed weapon (without penalty) like a one handed weapon (aka the feat monkey grip without the -2) is the equivelence of giving them an improved free first level feat. I wouldn't say that it needs to be over +1 for ECL but there needs to be something on it. Tivanir (talk) 09:05, 9 October 2013 (MDT)

balancing 2.0[edit]

I agree with Tivanir on most of these things. The int/inborn skill thing doesn't change your total skill points but lowers the ability for use as the base stat in skills. this makes it a minus. Wings are a big plus pretty much any race i've seen with wings is at least +2 LA. Changes to Strength is bigger than other stats so thats a plus (effectively negating the minus from intelligence.) That being said the LA should probably be +1 for clumsy and poor, +2 for average, and +3 for good. (perfect is out of the question for natural material plane flight.)

The weird feat should just get dropped completely because there is no reason these guys could do that. #1 heavier stuff is bad for fliers. #2 the only existing way to use a two-hander one -handed without penalty to hit is to use a weapon too small for you which reduces damage first from not having the 1.5 Str dmg booster and second from it being a smaller weapon.

One more thing on flight. Treat reductions in speed from armor normally but remember that creatures with flight cannot fly while carrying anything heavier than a light load. Mithral is your friend.

Thanks for the Help[edit]

Original Creator here (I had to create a new account, that's why the names are slightly different): Thanks a ton! I'll apply those changes now. And I'm thinking Fly (average). - Armillion the Wizened
