A pair of star elves, source |
Star elves, formally the ruar-tel-quessir and colloquially called mithral elves due to the dull shine of their silvery skin, are a distant relative of high elves. In addition to their skin and eyes, which takes on shades ranging from pearl to faint violet often with flecks of gold or silver, they can be differentiated from other elves by their gold, red, or silver hair and the starlight lamps (hooded lanterns that shed the dim light of the stars and consume holy water instead of oil) that hang from their foreheads.
History[edit]
Millennia ago, the high elves that would one day become star elves settled in the Yuirwood, a forest infused with all manners of magic within the Unapproachable East, where they joined with a tribe of wild elves. Over generations, this union became the Yuir elves, then the nation of Yuireshanyaar. After 5,000 years of peace, the Yuirwood was attacked by the human empire Unther to the west, and a wave of gray orcs from another world to the east. Already weakened and seeing the hungry empires of Narfell and Raumathar rise nearby, the high mages of Yuireshanyaar deigned it necessary to flee their home to Sildëyuir, a Feywild mirror of the Yuirwood blanketed in eternal night.
For nearly 2,000 years, the energies of the Feywild worked at the fey nature of elves of the Yuirwood, transforming them into the star elves of today, living in near total isolation. To the new inhabitants of the Yuirwood, the star elves were a thing of legend until the past hundred years, when they began appearing from the ancient stone circles they had left from en masse. The leaders of these refugees brought with them warnings of an elder evil called the Devourer of Worlds, Mak Thuum Ngatha, and of his plagues of ethereal filchers, marauders, and theurges. Those who did not die in battle with the invaders are brought back to their impossible cities, where the very architecture drives them mad; flight is the only safe option, though many have stayed behind in hopes of reclaiming their home.
Society[edit]
The star elves of New Yuireshanyaar arrange themselves in large councils led and swayed by the decisions of the high mages; the oldest, wisest, and most magically gifted. These councils are massively hindered by the nature of most star elves; they are cautious to the utmost, and rarely act without absolute certainty. This extends even to their speech, which is often filled with long pauses, if not completely withheld, as they deliberate their next word.
Star elves have a great love for beauty. In their homelands, idle time is filled with carols and dance, and though they rarely engage in such practices beyond the safety of the utmost trusted company, many still delight in witnessing similar revelry. This extends even to inner beauty; a star elf's admiration or enmity is as hard to win as it is to lose.
Star elven history has colored most's opinion on other races. Humans are often seen as aggressive and greedy, and are treated with suspicion. They are largely welcoming to other elves, especially sun and wood elves, though this does not extend to moon elves, whose acceptance of humans is viewed in the same way as a child playing with a knife.
Star Elf Traits[edit]
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.
Starsight. You can see in dim light shed by stars as if it were bright light.
Extraplanar Sense. You are aware of any portals within 30 feet and the plane it leads to.
Otherworldly Touch. When you make a melee attack against a creature, you may infuse your strike with the starlight of Sildëyuir. The attack counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage, and on a hit the target must make a Wisdom saving throw. The DC of this saving throw is 8 + your Wisdom modifier + your proficiency bonus. On a failure, the target sees in bright light within 60 feet of it as if it were dim light shed by stars, and in dim light not shed by stars as if it were darkness.
You may use this trait a number of times equal to half your proficiency bonus, regaining all uses at the end of a long rest.
