Hardly noticeable against the sandy floor, a curled brown ball of spikes lay in wait. A single caltrop, easy to avoid... until it rolls under your feet.

Spiky Homunculi are creatures created by the spell Ell's Handy Homunculus. They function as a sort of intelligent caltrop when not functioning as a pet. It appears much like a hedgehog, but often moves by rolling, and purposely seeks to be stepped when it can.

Spiky homunculi have a +4 racial bonus to Tumble checks.

While generally constructs are neutral, a homunculi picks up the alignment of its creator on casting.

Combat[edit]

Handy homunculi make poor weapons. However, the spiky homunculi is more of a trap than a weapon, and makes a good start to an ambush. It actively seeks to roll into opponents squares, tumbling to avoid attacks of opportunity and getting underfoot.

Caltrop Roll (Ex): Due to the spiky body of the homunculi, those affected by its spike attack are affected as if they were hit by a caltrop.

Construction[edit]

The body is made of bone and clay, with the core crystal often embedded in the chest. A drop of the caster's blood is mixed in with the clay and bone shards used for spines, which all fuse together into a perfect blend on casting Ell's Handy Homunculus. The entire cost of supplies equals 500 gp.

Assembling the body requires a DC 15 Craft (pottery) or Craft (taxidermy) check.

CL 1st; Ell's Handy Homunculus, Caltrops; Never sold; Cost 500 gp + 25 XP.
