Maskmonger[edit]

Artificer Subclass

Some artificers specialize in clockwork, others in alchemy—but you, you're a Maskmonger. You craft magical masks infused with powerful emotions and memories, channeling joy, rage, fear, and sorrow into tangible artifacts. Each mask you create tells a story… and sometimes, the story takes on a life of its own.

Tool Proficiency

When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with weaver’s tools or leatherworker’s tools (your choice). If you already have proficiency, you gain expertise instead.

Maskmaker's Satchel

At 3rd level, you learn to create enchanted masks, stored in a special extradimensional satchel. You can store up to 3 masks in your satchel at a time, crafted during a long rest. While wearing or holding one, a creature gains its magical benefit until it removes or loses it. Only one mask can be worn or active at a time.

You start with the following masks:

Mask of Joy: While worn, this mask grants the wearer advantage on Charisma (Performance) and (Persuasion) checks. Once per long rest, the wearer can cast calm emotions.

Mask of Rage: While worn, the wearer gains +2 to melee damage rolls. Once per long rest, the wearer can cast wrathful smite.

Mask of Shadows: While worn, the wearer has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks. Once per long rest, the wearer can cast disguise self.

You can craft new masks during a long rest using your artificer infusions, tools, and Maskmaker's Satchel. You may choose from the following additional masks as you level:

At 5th level: Mask of Terror, Mask of Hope

At 9th level: Mask of Sorrow, Mask of Flame

At 15th level: Mask of the Forgotten, Mask of Command

(See "Expanded Mask List" below.)

Empathic Infusion

At 5th level, you can temporarily share a mask’s emotion with an ally. As a bonus action, you can choose a creature within 30 feet to be affected by a mask you are wearing for 1 minute. You may use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier per long rest.

Possession Ward

At 9th level, your knowledge of emotional artifacts grants you resistance to charm and fear effects while wearing any of your masks. In addition, when a creature wearing one of your masks would be charmed or frightened, you can use your reaction to make the mask absorb the effect instead. The mask is rendered inert until your next long rest.

The True Mask

At 15th level, you create a Mask of Many Faces, a powerful artifact mask that can shift into any mask you have ever created as a bonus action. In addition, you can now have up to 5 masks prepared in your satchel. Once per long rest, while wearing a mask, you may unleash its full power: cast a 5th-level spell associated with the mask (GM’s discretion or chosen from its school/emotion type) without using a spell slot.

Expanded Mask List

Mask of Terror (5th level): Grants advantage on Intimidation checks and immunity to the frightened condition. Once per long rest, cast fear.

Mask of Hope (5th level): Grants allies within 10 feet temporary hit points equal to your Intelligence modifier at the start of combat. Once per long rest, cast beacon of hope.

Mask of Sorrow (9th level): Grants advantage on Insight and Religion checks. Once per long rest, cast phantasmal killer.

Mask of Flame (9th level): Grants resistance to fire damage. Once per long rest, cast fireball at 3rd level.

Mask of the Forgotten (15th level): Grants immunity to divination magic and the scrying spell. Once per long rest, cast modify memory.

Mask of Command (15th level): Allies within 10 feet gain +1 to attack rolls and saving throws. Once per long rest, cast mass suggestion.
