Kamaitachi[edit]

Personality[edit]

The Kamaitachi tend to be pranksters. They usually avoid settlements, but occasionally venture into towns and villages to pilfer anything that looks interesting. Being three creatures in one, they are known to argue amonst themselves, which is a very odd sight to behold.

Physical Description[edit]

Each kamaitachi is a trio of large, intellegent weasels. Each individual weasel that forms a single kamaitachi is around three feet tall, and weighs between 20 and 30 pounds. Their fur tends to be reddish in hue, though brown and black undercoats are common. They have abnormally large claws on their front paws, which they use in combat to defend themselves.

Relations[edit]

Kamaitachi avoid other creatures except for other fey. They usually make desicions based on individuals rather than whatever race a particular person belongs to. They find elves fascinating, but most elves quickly grow irritated by their constant chattering. They like halflings, and have similar personalities, but do not fit into halfling settlements very well, because they contribute little.

Alignment[edit]

Often Chaotic Neutral

Lands[edit]

Most common in the Koshinetsu region of Japan, Kamaitachi can be found across the entire country.

Kamaitachi do not form communities. Rather, they live alongside other fey most of the year. Every spring, they gather together in large, temporary societies. These gatherings last several weeks and are essentially giant celebrations. They trade interesting items they have acquired, mate, drink excessively, and play childish games. Young kamaitachi are raised by their mothers and mature quickly. Each weasel that makes up the mother kamaitachi gives birth to a single weasel, and the three offspring make up a newborn kamaitachi.

Religion[edit]

Kamaitachi have no organized religion. They often worship deities of air and the wind, and gods of rogues and tricksters. Nature deities are also popular. Kamaitachi tend to show respect to several deities, depending on the circumstances. Very few become clerics.

Language[edit]

Kamaitachi speak Sylvan and Japanese.

Names[edit]

Most kamaitachi use traditional Japanese names. An important note is that each of the three weasels that make up each kamaitachi have their own name. They love confusing their friends and allies by making it difficult to tell the weasels apart.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • -4 Strength, +6 Dexterity: Small in stature, kamaitachi are incredibly nimble.
  • Fey
  • Small: +1 AC, +1 attack rolls, -4 grapple, +4 Hide.
  • Kamaitachi base land speed is 20 feet: Fly 40 feet (Perfect)
  • Hit Points: Despite being composed of three bodies, a kamaitachi character has one hit point pool shared by all three weasels. Damage or healing applied to one affect all three as though they were one creature.
  • Triple Turns (Ex): All three weasels act on the initiative. Each weasel makes a separate move action, but they share a standard action. If they would normally only make one attack, then only one weasel makes an attack. Multiple attacks may be spread among them. However, if one or more of the weasels focus on a single target, they gain damage bonuses (see Natural Attack). If one weasel makes a double move, then they all can, but none of them can attack. If one makes a Full Attack, the others can move, but they cannot use their move action for anything other than moving. A kamaitachi cannot flank with itself, even if two of the weasels are in flanking position, but they can flank with three teammates.
  • Shared Mind (Ex): Each of the individual weasels that make up a single kamaitachi know everything the other two know. The weasels must stay within 60 feet away of one of the other weasels. If one remains outside this range for more than ten minutes per point of constitution, that specific weasel loses 2 points from all physical abilities every ten minutes until each score is reduced to zero (minimum 1 Con) and he is rendered unconscious. The other to weasels know what is happening, and can come find the third. Once back within the 60 ft range, the weasel regains 2 ability points per minute until its ability score return to normal.
  • Shared Soul (Ex): Any spell or magic item that affects one of the weasels affects all of them. While they can share the effects of magical items, they are limited to the same magic item slots as any other character. For example, they can only gain the benefits of two rings or one amulet between them, no matter how many they wear. If they wear armor, any magical effects such as enhancement bonuses are shared, but the non-magical modifiers such as AC bonus and armor check penalty are not. Likewise, carrying capacity and encumbrance are tracked separately.
  • Teamwork (Ex): When the kamaitachi makes a skill check, a single check is rolled for all three weasels. For example, if they are searching for traps, make a single check for all the weasels rather than three individual checks. In addition, the weasels can share a single space without penalties.
  • Natural Attack: A kamaitachi’s claws deal 1d4 damage. If two weasels are attacking the same target (or one weasel attacks a target adjacent to a second weasel that is not attacking another target), the damage increases. Two weasels working together ignore strength penalties to damage, or add 1.5 times their Strength modifier if they have a Strength score higher than 11. If all three weasels focus on a single target, the claw damage is increased to 1d6 as well. Both of each weasel’s paws must be used for a single claw attack, so they cannot use Two Weapon Fighting.
  • Automatic Languages: Sylvan, Japanese (or Common). Bonus Languages: Gnome, Elven, Goblin, Halfling.
  • Favored Class: Rogue.
  • Level Adjustment: +2
