The Hunter's Animal Companion[edit]

The hunter has an animal that helps on her journeys. Each animal has its own unique features and abilities for the hunter to benefit from, varying based on the size of the animal, as well as its type.

Behavior

For all intents and purposes, an animal companion is still a wild animal. If left to its own devices, it will behave more or less like a normal animal of its kind. however, it will never wander of its own volition far from the hunter, unless it is told to stay behind or go off for a long distance. Animal companions can always find their way back to the hunter. A hunter must make a handle animal check (DC=15) to command her animal companion. Unless preoccupied or otherwise deterred from returning, an animal companion will always come when called without the need for a roll. A hunter's animal companion cannot be commanded by another creature without her permission, except by supernatural means.

If capable of doing so, a hunter's animal companion will always defend her if she is knocked unconscious. Some animals have specific behaviors when the hunter is in danger.

Leveling

The hunter's animal companion is always the same level as the player's hunter level. As the hunter levels up, her animal companion gains abilities based on what type of animal it is. When the animal companion levels up, it does not gain bonus feats or ability score improvements like a player character would.

Unlike a normal animal of the same type, animal companions make defense rolls and have a defense bonus, adding their Dexterity modifier just like a player character. Animal companions have a base attack bonus that increases with level.

Abilities

At 5th level and every 4 levels thereafter, the hunter gains an ability with her animal companion specific to that animal. A hunter's animal companion is treated as knowing all existing tricks as per the handle animal skill, as well as extra tricks as listed below. If the animal companion is not capable of attacking, it does not know the attack or defend tricks.

Carry (DC 15): The animal companion will carry an item for you for as long as you ask it to.

Deliver (DC 20): The animal companion will deliver an item to a designated creature or location. It can then either wait at that location, or return to the hunter.

Patrol (DC 20): The animal companion will patrol a designated area against possible incoming threats or substantial informational developments. In the case of either appearing, it will alert the hunter. If a threat approaches, and the animal companion was instructed to attack it (DC 25)), it will do so.

Speak (DC 25): You communicate a specific message to your animal companion. You can also interpret a message from your animal companion (DC 30).

Search (DC 25): The animal companion will begin to search for something for you. If it involves tracking a creature or item, the animal companion must be capable of tracking. If it involves navigating small spaces, the animal companion must be capable of doing so. Otherwise, it will just search the surrounding area.

Animal Types

A hunter can choose an animal companion from the following list of animals, based on what type of features she wants from her companion. The hunter's animal companion should be reflective and befitting of her character, and should not feel out of place in the hunter's normal environment.
