Games of Chance (DnD Other)
Games of Chance (Forgotten Realms)[edit]
Many adventurers in the Forgotten Realms don't just risk their lives in dungeons—they also risk their gold at the tables of chance. Taverns, shady backrooms, noble courts, and floating casinos all host games of luck and skill. Below are several examples of common gambling games in Faerûn, as well as suggestions for how to run them in your campaign.
Common Games[edit]
Dragon Dice[edit]
A fast-paced dice game popular in Waterdeep and Luskan. Each player rolls three six-sided dice, attempting to match combinations like "Three of a Kind" or "Dragon’s Wrath" (three sixes). Highest combo wins the pot.
[edit]
A card game similar to poker, played with a 52-card Faerûnian deck. Betting rounds and bluffing are common. Often played in noble circles with high stakes.
Spinner’s Fortune[edit]
A wheel-based game found in larger gambling halls. The wheel is divided into magically numbered segments. Players place bets on outcomes, and the wheel is spun using a minor enchantment.
Goblin Toss[edit]
A chaotic betting game found in back alleys and goblin camps. Involves throwing enchanted stones or small creatures into scoring zones. Outcomes are often unpredictable—and dangerous.
Running Gambling in a Campaign[edit]
To simulate gambling, use contested ability checks (usually Charisma [Deception], Wisdom [Insight], or Sleight of Hand) or rely on simple dice mechanics. Allow players to bet gold and make opposed rolls against NPCs or the house.
Consider using games as tools for:
- Breaking tension between quests
- Introducing NPCs
- Starting bar fights or secret meetings
- Offering gold sinks and risk-reward choices
