Strategies and Tactics[edit]

Keep away from their pods, and use anything flammable or explosive to quickly destroy thousands of them.

Sample Encounters[edit]

A giant mass of Coalgobblers barrels the players way, causing the ground to shake and the walls they scrape across to become smoothly rubbed, as they spit their special acid-spit onto them as they pass in order to dissolve them for consumption. Each pod will have anywhere from 1000-20000 Coalgobblers (CR 5 - CR 10), and there are very few ways to stop them. They are very easily destroyed by fire as they are mainly coal based, or crushing them with rocks will split the pods up into smaller chunks.

Ecology[edit]

Cursed dwarves from an eon ago were forced to go into mines and consume as much coal as possible to turn them into a specialized gunpowder used against magical boundaries. Those dwarves did so for hundreds of years as their bodies deteriorated due to the lack of nutrition. As they deteriorated, the pigment in their skin and hair began to turn black due to the all coal diet, and after that time they had been reduced to small shrivels of themselves. A side effect of the ancient curses set upon them caused their memory to be kept throughout the generations, causing the severely malformed dwarves to be highly intelligent in comparison to their bodies, though they can only be communicated with telepathy. Though they can never stop moving else their coalic forms disintegrate upon stopping, they can and are willing to communicate with those who can telepathically communicate to them, though the thousands of voices all at once can drive those of leak will insane upon hearing their chatter. Environment: Cavern Types Typical Physical Characteristics: Black and fuzzy looking, though once grabbed and separated from a group of them will begin to have a more humanoid form, morphing its body to be similar to that of a humans, though only black throughout except for its bright white eyes.

Sample Lair[edit]

Any mineshaft or cave near mining settlements.

Typical Treasure[edit]

When detonated, they tend to clear the surrounding area, revealing whatever was in the walls around them. This tends to destroy entire hallways in Mineshafts though.
