Chaos Caller[edit]

Ranger Subclass

There is so much magic flowing through nature. It is wild, untamed, and chaotic. For many, the raw magic of nature is too much and they instead harness it for specific effects. The Chaos Callers are different. Rangers of this conclave reach out to the wild weave of magic and ask it for help, like a wolf calling for its pack. For these specialists, nature will answer, but not always in the way they expect. The magic they call on is uncontrollable, and they have adapted to working with what they are given.

Chaos Caller Magic

Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Wayfarer Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Chaos Caller Spells
Ranger Level Spells
3rd Chaos Bolt
5th Fortune's Favor
9th Counterspell
13th Hallucinatory Terrain
17th Transmute Rock
Chaotic Strike

At 3rd level, you can augment your weapon with the free flowing magic of nature. Once on each of your turns, when you hit with a weapon, you can deal an extra 1d4 damage. When you do, roll 1d4 and refer to the Chaotic Strike table to determine the damage type. In addition, when you do this, you can call which type you think it will be. If you chose correctly, you add an additional 1d4.

The extra damage dice increase to d6's when you reach 11th level in this class.

Chaotic Strike
1d4 Damage Type
1 Cold
2 Fire
3 Lightning
4 Thunder
Chaos Call

Also at 3rd level, the raw and untamed arcane responds to your call. When you mark a creature as your Favored Foe, you can either apply the effect as normal, or roll on the Chaos Call table using your Favored Foe damage die to apply a special effect for the duration.

If the effect requires a saving throw, it uses your spell save DC.

Chaos Call
Favored Foe Die Effect
1 You are marked as the target's favored foe for 1 minute, expending a use of the ability. It uses your Favored Foe damage die. You can still mark a creature as your Favored Foe while this effect is active.
2 Each time you hit the target with an attack, it and each creature of your choice within 5ft of it take your Favored Foe damage.
3 You can forgo rolling on the Chaotic Strike table when attacking your Favored Foe, treating each activation as a correct call.
4 Each time you hit the target with an attack, they must succeed a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of you until the start of your next turn.
5 When the target hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to teleport to an unoccupied space you can see within 30ft.
6 The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. You become invisible to the target on a failure.
7 You have advantage on all attack rolls made against the target.
8 The next time you hit the target with an attack, it is treated as a critical hit. The target is no longer marked as your Favored Foe immediately after this effect occurs.
Mark of the Wild

Beginning at 7th level, your Hunter's Mark drastically alters the flow of magic through the affected. When you cast Hunter's Mark on a creature, you can also apply one of the following effects:

  • When the marked creature casts a spell, you can use your reaction to up-cast or down-cast it by 1 level, without expending a spell slot of the new level. Up-casting cannot increase the spell above the caster's highest available spell slot, and down-casting cannot decrease the spell below its lowest possible level.
  • When the marked creature forces you to make a saving throw against an ability or spell, you can use your reaction to change the type of saving throw you make to resist it. If the original save required a physical stat, you can only change it to another physical stat. If the original save required a mental stat, you can only change it to another mental stat.
Mystic Hunter

At 11th level, you can refocus the flow of wild magic on to a different target. When you apply or move your Hunter's Mark on to a different target, you can immediately mark them as your Favored Foe without expending a use of the ability. However, you must forgo the damage and roll on the Chaos Call table.

Cry of Discord

When you reach 15th level, the world itself answers your cry help in the form of chaotic magic. Whenever you roll on the Chaos Call table, you can roll the die twice and choose either of the two effects to activate. If you roll the same number on both dice, you can ignore the number and choose any effect on the table.
