Brand of the Darksign[edit]

You take on the mark that makes one a cursed undead.

The Darksign is not a blessing that should be taken lightly. Once branded, your fate is sealed for good: doomed to an eternal fate most terrible and cruel, as a hollow. Until then, you take on the following effects:

Undead Nature. Your creature type becomes undead. You no longer age.

Unshakeable Soul. The Darksign acts as an anchor for your soul. As such, you and your soul are immune to the effects of soul-meddling magic, such as magic jar, astral projection or clone, as well as resurrective magic, such as resurrection or reincarnate. You also can't be possessed or controlled by said magic or by magic-like effects.

Undeath. The life of an undead is not one of true immortality, but of innumerable counts of dying and coming back. Whenever you reach 0 hit points, you die immediately instead of falling unconscious; 24 hours after death, your soul immediately returns to your corpse, revitalizing you anew. When this happens, you come back to life with full hit points, hit dice, spell slots, and other features that recharge on short or long rests restored.
You can still die of suffocation, starvation, dehydration, or lack of sleep; The Darksign will bring you back all the same.

Darksign's Curse. Each death you take comes with a price: Every time you die, the Darksign saps away some of your humanity, permanently lowering one of your ability scores by one. You may choose which ability score gets lowered when this happens.
Once the sum of your ability scores reaches a total lower than 48 (less than an average of 8 per ability score), your mind deteriorates completely and you turn hollow. Once you turn hollow, you become a hostile ghoul under the control of the DM. This ghoul retains your original Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution ability scores.

Your DM may rule that there are ways to revert the ability score reduction incurred by the Darksign's Curse. Various methods of curse-refreshing your DM may opt for include consuming a particular kind of rare item, gaining a level or epic boon, earning the favor of a specific god, or maybe just wearing a particularly fancy hat.

Once you become hollow, that's it. You've passed the Point of No Return. Your character is absolutely finished and can never come back. Not even the gods can save you now.
