Bloody Blade

Through arcane pact, religious devotion or visceral study, you have unlocked the power to infuse weapons with your very blood, making them a part of yourself.

Over the course of a short rest, you may expend 1 hit die to transform one weapon you touch into a Bloody Blade. This weapon must have the following prerequisites:

  • You must be proficient in this weapon.
  • It cannot be a sentient weapon.
  • It cannot be an improvised weapon.

Upon completing the short rest, the weapon is bound to you by blood. This weapon's appearance may change as you wish. While bound to you, it gains the following benefits:

  • The weapon gains one property of your choice: Finesse, Heavy, Versatile or Reach (See Below).
  • You may summon the weapon(s) to your hand as a bonus action.
  • If a creature other than you attempts to wield a Bloody Blade, you may choose for them to make a Constitution saving throw (DC equal to 8 + your Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma modifier (You may only choose once) + your proficiency bonus) or take 1d6 magical piercing damage as bloody thorns pierce their hand. On a success or fail, the creature then drops the weapon. You may choose for a creature to be immune to this effect.
  • When making an attack with the weapon, you may choose to hemorrhage the target if it has blood. The creature must make a Constitution saving throw . On a fail, the target takes 1d4 necrotic damage at the beginning of each of its turns for 1 minute, and the weapon deals 1 additional necrotic damage. For every stack of hemorrhaged, you gain an additional +1 necrotic damage to your damage rolls with your weapon, to a maximum equal to your {Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma modifier + proficency bonus (You may only choose once). This bonus lasts for 1 minute.

You may only have up to two Bloody Blades at a time. Upon creation of another, the oldest Blood Blade returns to its original form.

There are some stipulations for which weapons gain what property.

  • Two-Handed Weapons with the versatile property have their damage dice reduced when wielded in one hand (2d6/1d12 -> 1d10 -> 1d8/2d4, etc). You do not have disadvantage on attack and damage rolls when a weapon is wielded in this way.
  • Weapons with the Heavy property cannot gain the Finesse property, and vice versa.
  • Weapons with the Reach property do not gain extra reach from this feature.
