A Caster's Guide to Infinite Wishes (5e Optimized Character Build)

Introduction: So, you want to make an infinite Wish loop? Requirements: Wizard or Sorcerer of 17-th level with the ability to cast Wish. You can be a Wizard of 13-th level that can just cast Simulacrum, but it is not recommended for concerns of component cost and casting time.

Wish. The pinnacle of a spellcaster's arsenal. It allows you to cast 8-th level spells and even access some greater effects. Now, imagine having nigh-infinite wishes and not suffering any adverse effects. That's what we're going to do today. This is a Caster's Guide to Infinite Wishes. Note: While this optimization is entirely sound RAW (rules as written) it does make use of the "Rule of Cool" to a degree. It takes a bit of a stretch in terms of DM allowance.

Step 1: Get a Wish-casting Minion. To kick this off you need to find a creature that can cast Wish at least twice a day or cast Simulacrum and Wish once. The only options I've found for the two wishes are a caster with Wish and the epic boon "Boon of High Magic" (DMG 232) or a potent Genie with two or more castings of Wish (MM 144). I suggest casting Dominate Monster on the caster as an insurance policy to ensure cooperation. You can also use Polymorph on them to lower their capacity to pass the Wisdom saving throw beforehand. Finally, if you're a Wizard and have it handy then cart them off to a private Demiplane to work uninterrupted. Take your minion- er, valued employee and cast Simulacrum on them. You should preferably use Wish to cast this and avoid the casting time and material component cost. This gives you a copy of the creature that has those 2+ wishes or Simulacrum. And with that, congratulations! You have infinite wishes!

Step 2: Setting up the loop. Ok, ok. I suppose an explanation is in order. You need to chain the Simulacrum spell to get more duplicates with Wish. Simulacrum has one annoying little downside, though. From Simulacrum: "If you cast this spell again, any currently active duplicates you created with this spell are instantly destroyed" (PHB 276). However, emphasis on "If you cast..." Another little excerpt from Simulacrum: "The duplicate is a creature... and it can take Actions and otherwise be affected as a normal creature." So the duplicate can use one of its castings of Wish or it's Simulacrum to cast Simulacrum on itself. The duplicate uses one spell slot to cast Wish but still has a casting of Wish, either way. You can now slay the original caster or Genie if they are a nuisance. You have everything you need.

Step 3: The Infinite Wish Loop You now have two duplicates with one wish each. I'll name them to make the following section easier to understand. The first duplicate (Fineas) follows you and the second duplicate (Pherb) follows the first. So they both effectively follow you. You can have Fineas use their Wish now. Also, command Fineas to command Pherb to take orders from you solely. Then, cast Simulacrum on Pherb. It's fine if you need to take a day to get spell slots back to cast it. Fineas is destroyed because you casted Simulacrum. There don't seem to be any adverse effects recorded in the rulebooks regarding dispelled Simulacrums having Simulacrums, so we can assume Pherb isn't dispelled even though Fineas is gone. You get a copy of Pherb in return for Fineas' sacrifice. We'll call the new duplicate Pherb II. You can have Pherb II use their wish however you want. Then recycle Pherb II for Pherb III by recasting Simulacrum on Pherb. And so on. And with that you have infinite wishes limited only by your castings of Simulacrum! You could bypass needing to set up Pherb in the first place by replacing them with the original target of Simulacrum. This target could even be yourself if you have Wish and Simulacrum. But all of the above is *totally* a better way of going about it so that you can bypass the material components and casting time of Simulacrum and have a duplicate with a 9-th level slot. Also, having the original caster means you need to keep them cooperating instead of having Pherb who will mindlessly follow you. Either way, enjoy the loop and the cosmos at your disposal!
