Ability Scores and Modifiers[edit]
Each of a creature's abilities has a score, a number that defines the magnitude of that ability. An ability score is not just a measure of innate capabilities, but also encompasses a creature's training and competence in activities related to that ability.
A score of 10 or 11 is the normal human average, but adventurers and many monsters are a cut above average in most abilities. A score of 20 is the highest that a person usually reaches and can be considered a "soft cap" for adventurers. More powerful beings can have ability scores ranging all the way up to 50.
Each ability also has a modifier, derived from the score and ranging from −5 (for an ability score of 1) to +20 (for a score of 50). The Ability Scores and Modifiers table notes the ability modifiers for the range of possible ability scores, from 1 to 50.
Score | Modifier |
---|---|
1 | −5 |
2–3 | −4 |
4–5 | −3 |
6–7 | −2 |
8–9 | −1 |
10–11 | +0 |
12–13 | +1 |
14–15 | +2 |
16–17 | +3 |
18–19 | +4 |
20–21 | +5 |
22–23 | +6 |
24–25 | +7 |
26–27 | +8 |
28–29 | +9 |
30-31 | +10 |
32-33 | +11 |
34-35 | +12 |
36-37 | +13 |
38-39 | +14 |
40-41 | +15 |
42-43 | +16 |
44-45 | +17 |
46-47 | +18 |
48-49 | +19 |
50 | +20 |
To determine an ability modifier without consulting the table, subtract 10 from the ability score and then divide the total by 2 (round down).
Because ability modifiers affect almost every attack roll, ability check, and saving throw, ability modifiers come up in play more often than their associated scores.
Speed[edit]
Speed is a derived ability score, as it is closely correlated with your Dexterity and Constitution scores - the logic is that agility and physical fitness play equal part in determining how fast you can move. Therefore, your speed is calculated as the average of your Dexterity and Constitution scores, plus 1d6-1d6. Speed is, unlike other ability scores not capped at all! Any character, mortal or otherwise, can possess a speed of 50 or higher.
For every 1 point of speed you possess, you can move 1 yard per round.
Virtue and Sin[edit]
Virtue and Sin are special ability scores that can change during gameplay at the DM's discretion. Your character has an "emblematic" virtue and an "emblamatic" sin, determined by your own choice or rolled randomly with a d8. Your "emblamatic" characteristic is whichever trait you display greatest, for good or for ill, and affects how your character is expected to behave.
