Breaking the reality in fantasy is usually done for a specific reason, not one, respectfully, based on lack of knowledge in a particular field.

To those who wish to include an Arctic Circle and a Tropics to your global maps should note that the location of these are directly based on an axial tilt. For instance, our Earth has its axis tilted about 23.5 degrees off of being perpendicular to its orbital plane. In this case the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer are 23.5 degrees off of the Equator. Likewise, the Arctic and Antarctic circles are located about 23.5 degrees off of the North and South poles respectively.

The special effects of being within an Arctic circle are being in complete darkness in the winter season and continuous light in the summer season. The Tropic lines are known for having the sun being directly overhead at high noon only on one day during the Solstices, the sun never getting closer to the pole during the rest of the year.

SO.. this map shows the arctic circle being approx. 50 deg off of the north pole... more than the halfway point of 45 deg. In this case, the lines of the tropics should also then be the same, approx. 50 degrees, off of the equator. This geometrical necessity puts the tropic line NORTH of the arctic line by about 10 degrees.

Doing this.. leads to some interesting effects. The extensive areas pole-ward of the arctic circles --even the 10 degree area that overlaps with the tropical zone-- will be plunged into extended periods of total darkness and then transition into continual light every year. And while being within the tropics is usually the way to enjoy moderate temperatures, with the arctic lines being closer to the equator than the tropic lines, the moderate temperatures will only be found in the areas that are not plunged into continual darkness or light for extended periods of time.. the area around the equator outward and up to the arctic lines.

OTHERWISE.. you could pull the arctic circles closer to the poles to be the same, in degrees, that the tropics are from the equator.

Hope this helps. scarpster at soufla dot net
