The Athame of a Thousand Deaths (5e Equipment)

Weapon (dagger), Legendary (requires attunement)

The Athame of a Thousand Deaths is a steel athame with an ebony handle, engraved with a meaningless geometric pattern. It smells faintly of old blood, like a butcher's knife that hasn't been well cared for.

You may use this weapon as a spell focus.

Ritual Offering When you cast a spell as a ritual, you may draw an insignificant quantity of your own blood and spread it across the blade. Doing so allows you to use the spell's normal casting time, rather than adding 10 minutes to it. Once you use this benefit, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest. You do not have to be attuned to the Athame to use it in this manner, but using it thrice thusly while capable of attunement does so automatically.

Curse. This athame is cursed. Attuning to this item curses you until you are targeted by a remove curse spell or similar magic. If you are dropped to zero hit points by the Athame and are capable of attuning to it, you automatically do so instead of falling unconscious, and then immediately die.

A Resting Death. While under the Athame's curse, you are plagued by terrible nightmares, and are therefor incapable of taking a long rest through normal means. If while you are conscious the Athame is used to kill you, such as being plunged into your heart, you are resurrected four hours later as if by the spell raise dead and immediately gain the benefits of a long rest. After you return, the athame cannot be used in this manner again until it is recharged by exposure to the light of the rising sun. If you die while unconscious, or by any means other than with the charged Athame, you do not return. If the spell gentle repose is cast upon your corpse, you do not return until the spell ends or is otherwise dispelled.

A Routine Ordeal. After using this curse to die and return four times, death becomes somewhat routine for you. You no longer suffer from a −4 penalty for the ordeal of coming back from the dead.

A Faithful Return. Once you are cursed by the Athame, you cannot be disarmed of it unless you are incapacitated. If it is on the same plane of existence, you can summon it as a bonus action on your turn, causing it to teleport instantly to your left hand. If the Athame is removed from your chest during your resting death, it does this automatically upon your return.
