Ex, Su, or Sp[edit]

Balance - 8/10[edit]

This class is well balanced; the entry prerequisites are not too steep (or lax), and the class gains power consistently, but not too fast. While it is not extremely inspired, it adds a level of further customization and specialization to many different classes, just as a prestige class should. The Build[edit]

With a dedicated diplomancy build (the Politico), this class is HORRIFYING. With people who -aren't- actively trying to break their games, this is a very neat class. Warforged 18:33, 12 December 2006 (MST)

Rating 4/10[edit]

Not so interesting to be played, imho; at least 8+int mod skills/level would make it par with a rogue, in terms of extra-combact features and it would make him much more likely, considering he is going to be some sort of spy or extremely trained aristocrat, sent on a mission by his superiors in order to solve things without using brute force or (too many) dirty tricks... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 84.221.198.36 (talkcontribs) 16:36, 25 January 2007 (MST). Actually, dirty tricks are important, and I think that this should be noted as a support character. You would definitely needs a seriously pwoerful combatant as an ally when playing this class. I see this a good class for an evil villain. Theophenes 17:10, 21 February 2007 (MST)
Keep in mind that there are other types of play than straight hack-n-slash. This character obviously excels in an urban, roleplaying intense atmosphere. Just because the character is not good at dungeon crawls does not necessarily mean it should be rated as part of a category that includes, to quote the balance page, "a few show-stoppers." A class having 6+ rather than 8+ skills hardly qualifies as having a "show stopping" disparity. In terms of mechanical abilities, this class is fairly well balanced. Perhaps it should have 8+ in skills; in that case, it should be rated as an 7, since it would only need "bit of tweaking." Further, how interesting the class is involves the balance system much less (only insofar as "interesting" means "fulfills a role that another class does not"). Matters of personal taste, for obvious reasons, ought to be avoided in regard to balancing a class. --EldritchNumen 23:10, 21 February 2007 (MST)
They could still be useful in dungeon-crawls too, if some of the opposition is sufficiently humanoid to allow infiltration via Disguise Self (spell duration might be a problem, but continuously-functioning devices are cheaply made). Imagine a party steadily battling its way through a dungeon using maps and tactical information being passed on by a disguised Diplomat ahead of them, operating behind enemy lines... a Rogue could also try this, but a Diplomat will have a bigger Bluff chance (Diplomatic Finesse) and a greater likelihood of speaking the appropriate language. And spells, of course.
I settled on 6 skillpoints because each level of Diplomatic Finesse is already equivalent to a rank in Bluff, Diplomacy, Gather Information and Sense Motive (and Intimidate if you're trying to frighten someone by talking to them) - actually better, because it would stack with a maxed-out skill. --Findail 10:50, 22 February 2007 (MST)
I agree. As I mentioned above, I think this is a nicely designed and useful class (I gave it 8/10). Unfortunately an IP gave it this rating, and has not returned to flesh out it's comments. Further, I highly doubt the IP understood the balance system; like I said above, the reasoning for a 4 of 10 was basically ludicrous. I personally think so. While it is important not to be elitist or exclusive in allowing users to balance projects, some users (especially IPs) don't seem to understand how the balance system works. This rating, for example, seems like a rating of how much the IP would want to play the character, and is not actually a measure of how balanced (in terms of rules) the class is. It is a dangerous line to walk (the line between being exclusionary and holding the raters to some level of responsibility), but-- especially since the IP has not returned to respond to the counter comments, I think this should be removed. Honestly, I think findail has created a class that is generally quite good, and having an IP give the class a "4" just because it didn't like the class is both silly and insulting to findail (it is unwarranted and incorrect criticism). —EldritchNumen 14:42, 6 March 2007 (MST)

Rating - 7/10[edit]

IMHO, it's a very good class, with just slight "problems" (they're not actually problems, but since I couldn't find a better word I'll use it). The spells are deffinetly good and serve very well their pupose.

The skills list is kinda limited. You could add hide, move silently and maybe spot, search and listen, because a diplomat should be swift in his movements and should pay a lot of attention to the environment.

The special abilities are nice. You could also add a bonus feat or two from a very selected list including only feats that would help him socially, reflecting his focus in social interaction. Since he is weak in combat, he should really excel in what he does best. Also, diplomatic knowledge and diplomatic finesse doesn't need to appear in every level in the list since you stated you add your class level to the checks (just a cosmetic advice, not taken in account in the balance rating) --ElfsMaster 19:47, 30 January 2008 (MST)
