Talk:Cannoneer (5e Subclass)

Hello, fellow wikian! Wielding a cannon was a fantasy for me as well, I think we all share the same kick-arse moments. Here are some comments I would like to share with you:

  • Forging Devastation. I guess the Unearthed Arcane Artificer class inspired you, perhaps? If not, I highly recommend you check it out, because a gunsmith provides some essential parts that you might need.
Just checking: Crafting a cannon takes 30 hours (I thought 24 hours would be nice, not because it's shorter, but because it can be calculated as "a day"), no gp cost mentioned ("sufficient materials worth n gp" could do) and you have to succeed on a DC 15 (what ability?) check with a smith's tools, right?
Ooh, neat! At first I was confused that a cannon has a 5-foot range, but it can be useds as a melee weapon as well, right? And you can use an action to have a 30-foot cannon blast. I think this is very clever, since a cannon would definitely be a heavy bulk that can be used as a bludgeon. One thing: ranged weapons have no minimum range in the first place in 5th edition.
I thought that reloading a cannon could use a bonus action, since you can take one bonus action at a time, so reloading a cannon restricts you to fire one shot per turn. The current version allows you to take two shots per turn when you reach 20th level.
One hitch: How many charges can a cannon hold? The following features mention "expeding multiple charges", but with this important criteria missing, I'm a bit confused.
  • Siege Mode. Either Starcraft or Overwatch, I guess? Very nice, something that I would not have imagined in D&D. I think the balancing is kinda neat, except that maybe taking some damage from spells and/or getting your jammed by mind-affecting spells might be able to break your siege mode.
  • Burst Round. A burst round, something a fighter desperately needs. Not bad, I guess?
  • Tracking Shot. "Cannot be avoided" is a bit too strong, perhaps, even if it means you use an entire action on it. Maybe you force the target make a saving throw (Dexterity, my guess) and impose disadvantage on that save.
  • Awakening Mode. Bastion, roll out! ...Am I right? I'm not sure if this is overpowered or okay, since although not expending a limited ammunition is quite powerful, I still don't know how many charges a cannon can hold.

Well, that's it for now. In short: Nice idea, quite elaborately designed, maybe a little bit of tweaking and voila, you can maybe challenge having your work for next Unearthed Arcana. Awesome job, I really love to see a great work. --WeirdoWhoever (talk) 14:42, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Hey i forgot to add charges!!! its actually 7 in total. Ive also changed the duration to a day and added a gp cost of 100. I added the reloading mechanism based around attacking with melee so the flow of combat isnt disrupted. You can melee to build up charges then start shooting till you run out of charges, or however you want to play it. I've also re-tweaked the siege mode swapping taking damage with concentration, its a more familiar term for D&D players and i think encompass the elements that need balancing a bit more. Ive also changed tracking shot so it does have a high chance of hitting but doesnt 'auto hit'. Ive also halved the time on the awakened mode. I got inspiration for this archetype from Chung from the game Elsword ---Vycanon (talk) 10:52 26 April 2017 (GMT+8)
