Area: Cone-Shaped emanation
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 min/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No


You can sense the presence or absence of life. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject.

1st Round: Presence or Absence of life. The caster can ignore plant or lesser forms of life before receiving information as a free action each round.
2nd Round: Number of living creatures in the area and the power of the most potent life aura present.
3rd Round: The power and location of each aura. If an aura is outside your line of sight (but within the spells area), then you discern its direction but not its exact location.

Aura Power: A life aura's power depends on the type and size of the being that you are detecting and it's HD.

Faint Plants and small animals (smaller than a wolf)
Moderate Large (wolf size or larger) animals, dire animals, and small or smaller humanoids and monsters
Strong Awakened animals, large and medium humanoids and monsters, and small or smaller dragons
Overwhelming Huge or larger humanoids and monsters, and Medium or larger dragons
Each round you can turn to detect life in a new area. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.

Help with Power Level: I italicized one phrase in this spell, because including it (and putting it in the table), greatly increases the power of the spell. I tend to want to leave HD out of this spell, but I'm not sure how to best balance it, or whether it is a 1st or 0th level spell. I put it in first because I see the utility closer to detect evil than detect magic. Also, if someone can put the Aura powers in tabular format (the way they are in the PHB for Detect Evil), I would appreciate it.
