Races (Reania Supplement)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The choice of race is the first expression of how your character is seen. Each of the different races have different cultures that over time have mixed a bit more leading to many cultures sharing some root traditions. Some races get along better with others and some are held in disdain, to a few races there are other races that are seen as little more than animals to be hunted. The race you choose will heavily influence how you are viewed by members of the world.

Common Races[edit]

Dragonborn[edit]

Dragonborn have existed since before recorded history but their population exploded around 3,000 years ago when Humans came to this world. The reason for this is because Dragonborn are created when another sentient race is exposed to Draconic Mana. Typically this process happens over a few generations of living near a dragon's lair, but the process can be expedited by a dragon willingly flooding a mortal with its magic, this process can be dangerous but the natural abilities of these Dragonborn are often superior to Dragonborn who are created by accident. There are two main reasons a dragon would choose to create a Dragonborn, first is if the dragon for some reason is fond of the person and wish to protect them, or the more common reason being that cultist who worship dragons are sometimes given the reward of draconic power for their service. When humans came to Reania the worship of dragons exploded in popularity making the Dragonborn race far more common over the millennia.

Lifespan 500-700 Years

Dwarf[edit]

Dwarves are one of the first races that lived on Reania as they were created early on in the planet's history by Drome the God of the Dwarves. Drome carved the first of the dwarves from stone and granted them life with the aid of his sister Aurel's magic. The Dwarves have long claimed the mountains and caverns as their domain and despite the advance of Human civilization 2,500 years ago the Dwarves lost the least amount of their territory to their colonization because the Humans could not properly navigate the stone halls the Dwarves carved. Dwarves are an untrusting people holding most other races at an arm's length away, the only race they openly embrace as a whole are the Gnomes. This is because their first recorded hero was once saved due to the kindness of Gnomes and as such swore an Oath that all Gnomes would have a place among the Dwarven halls. This relationship is very profitable for both parties as Dwarves supply Gnomes with the best materials and the Gnomes provide the Dwarves with some of the best technology in the world. When the Dark Elves first burned the Garden there were a number of dwarves who followed them as well who were afflicted with a similar curse to the Drow turning these Dwarves into the Duergar.

Lifespan 350-500 Years

Elf[edit]

The Elves were the first of the humanoid races in the world of Reania, the Goddess Aurel grew them in her Garden and blessed them with life. The Elves of the world have long been the first and foremost leaders in Magic and Alchemy of the world due to their race's wide range of magical affinity, unlike most other races an Elf can be born with potentially any magical affinity. When the Humans first arrived it was the Elves who opened their territory to them, building them cities and giving them supplies so they could become self sufficient. However, after just a few hundred years the population of these Human cities had grown at least 3 fold and the cities demanded more. The Elves who aged slowly and took centuries to produce just a few dozen children did not understand how the Humans populated so quickly. The Elves lost the most in the Human Expansion which resulted in many of their people being slaughtered and their lands lost. They also were divided due to a number of Elves being tricked by an Archdemon and turning against their own people, these Elves burned the Garden and capital of the Elves. For this sin, the Gods cursed them and their descendants with grey skin, blood red eyes, and white hair. This new subrace was called the Drow or Dark Elves, to escape persecution the Drow fled deep underground and have rarely been seen since due to most races not trusting them. The Drow are not the only outshoot of Elf however, throughout the millennia Elves have spread out to nearly any environment from large cities to dense forests and even deep underwater where some evolved into Tritons.

Lifespan 1,000-1,200 Years

Gnome[edit]

The Gnomes are masters of Artifice and Tinkering and nearly all significant advancements in technology can find its roots to the Gnomish people. The origins of the Gnomes are a mystery but it is theorized that they are a cousin species to both Dwarves and Halflings. In recent history, the Gnomish population has suffered due to a number of Human nations slaughtering and capturing Gnomes in the hundreds of thousands. The reason behind this genocide is because of the advancement of gunpowder in the last few hundred years, nearly every nation wants more advanced gunpowder weapons and wants no one else to have them. Because of this most Gnomes have gone into hiding with Dwarven allies. When the Duergar descended into the depths of the earth some Gnomes followed creating the Deep Gnomes or Svirfneblin.

Lifespan 350-500 Years

Goblin[edit]

Goblins are a very unique race in that they have only been around for about 1,000 years. Originally the Goblin race was an alchemical experiment by a wizard in an attempt to create a homunculus race that would act as servants, however, the plan went awry when the Goblins began to realize that they could breed naturally and not just be created from a cauldron. The Goblins at this point revolted and escaped to the wild of the world, their population quickly growing because they could produce children in just 3 months and be able to fight within a few years of being born. Because of the cruel treatment of the first generation of Goblins, the first couple of generations were a cruel people who would kidnap, pillage, and raze nearly any settlement they came across. While many goblins do still follow this lifestyle there is a decent number that are more neutral and in some cases good aligned now. Despite being neutral the history of Goblins being a warlike race has not been forgotten from anyone's mind making it so the race as a whole is often untrusted or despised in modern society.

Lifespan 70-100 Years

Goliath[edit]

Goliaths are an old race that originated when humanoid races were exposed to Jotunn magic. Unfortunately, true Jotunn magic has long since been lost ever since the war of the Giants. This means that no new Goliath clans can be created only the existing clans can keep on going. Nearly all Goliaths trace their origins back to the Spine of the World or the Boneyard of Kimeta. These environments require intense amounts of climbing to make it through and when a clan lives in these areas it is common for a Goliath to be considered an adult they must climb up a particularly dangerous area. Most Goliath Clans are a very neutral people not taking part in the wars of others, however, there have been many who leave their clan to pursue a life that suits their sheer size, strength, and durability. But once you leave your clan you are never welcome back. This rule has resulted in a large number of Goliaths in the civilized world away from the traditional clans.

Lifespan 150-300 Years

Half Elf[edit]

The Half Elves are the offspring of Humans and Elves, before 3,000 years ago they did not exist due to the lack of Humans. Normally when two races are sexually compatible the child will take on the race of the mother species, but for some reason, Humans create a combination with most races. Half Elves possess the advantages of both races, the versatility of the Humans, and the wide magical affinity of the Elves. However, due to the animosity between Elves and Humans in many Human societies, they possess too much Elf in them and in most Elven societies they possess too much Human in them. This combination of the two races is seen as a bad thing by some but to many, it is believed to be a boon because these Half Elves could act as a bridge between the races.

Lifespan 300-400 Years

Halfling[edit]

Halflings are a simple race that often does not long for much more than comfort and fun. Created by Hurst the God of the Hearth and Home the Halflings take after their creator. There have never been any great Halfling empires or wars, and they are just fine with that. Occasionally seeking fun and adventure a Halfling with become an adventurer and try to see the world. In matters of hospitality, the Halflings are unmatched because of their religious beliefs, one of the main pillars of their culture is to always open one's door to those in need.

Lifespan 200-250 Years

Half Orc[edit]

Half Orcs are the offspring of Humans and Orcs before 3,000 years ago they did not exist due to the lack of Humans. Normally when two races are sexually compatible the child will take on the race of the mother species, but for some reason, Humans create a combination with most races. Half Orcs possess the versatility of Humans and the strength and ferocity of the Orcs. Half Orcs in Orcish settlements are seen as an asset because they have a bit of a sharper mind than the average Orc and in Human settlements, they are seen as an asset because of their above average strength. Half Orcs are often embraced by both parent races but there are outliers that do exist.

Lifespan 100-120 Years

Human[edit]

Humans did not exist on the world of Reania for the vast majority of its history simply because they never were created or evolved into existence. It was only around 3,000 years ago that portals opened to a strange world across space and time and dragged Humans to the world. The Elves gave the Humans food, water, and shelter from their own supplies, but Humans reproduce and spread far faster than Elves and in just 100 years they needed more and demanded it of their saviors, when it could not be given or not given fast enough the Humans took, and thus began the long history of Humans taking. They were not born with magic and so they made deals and worshipped creatures with Godlike powers. The most famous of which are the Archdemons, the Dragons, and The 5 Great Evils. The Humans did war with nearly all other races and none of them could contend with the armies of darkness and the sheer population and survivability of Humans. Because of this war written history before 3,000 years ago is difficult to find and written history before 5,000 years ago is all but impossible to find.

Lifespan 70-100 Years

Orc[edit]

The Orcs were created far before Humans came to Reania and had a tenuous relationship with most other races. The race was created by the twin Gods Gorkanalin and Morkanalin the gods of war and bloodshed. In the wars started by Humanity, there was a decisive blow to the Divine, first Morkanalin was killed and his Divine soul was annihilated from existence by the 5th Great Evil The Dead Moon. Second, Gorkanalin was devoured by one of the Archdemons and thus the Orcs no longer possessed Divine guidance. Because of the death of their Gods, the Orcs no longer had an afterlife to go to, because of this Orcs have a very unique trait in that when they die their soul enters the weapon that killed them or another Orc nearby, this is said to grant their strength and bravery to the Orc. The Orcish race is unmatched in their skill with Runecarving and Medicine. The reason for this is because Runes are an honorable way of utilizing magic without using it as a crutch and there is no greater shame than dying of a wound outside of battle. It is a myth that Orcs only live 50-60 years, this is because dying while strong is a very popular concept in their culture so they do not often reach old age.

Lifespan 120-150 Years

Tiefling[edit]

Tieflings are the result of Infernal Mana being exposed to a humanoid. A Tiefling can be born to any humanoid race or any humanoid race can become a Tiefling later on in life. Infernal Mana can change someone through a variety of ways, the first and most common is simply wild magic making someone a Tiefling before they are born. The second way is that somewhere in your ancestry someone in your line made a deal with a Devil and Infernal Mana became part of their bloodline. The final and most uncommon way is making an Infernal Deal yourself and becoming a Tiefling instantly. Many people are wary of Tieflings and are afraid of them or do not trust them because of their slightly Fiendish nature. However, a vast majority of Tieflings are not evil despite what myths and legends, and old wives' tales say.

Lifespan Based off of the race they were or their parents were.
