If the krootox moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a fist attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. ACTIONS Multiattack. The krootox makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its fist. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) piercing damage. Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage.

A krootox and its rider.Source Where the kroot are agile and mobile combatants, the krootox is a lumbering force of primal strength. This offshoot possesses all the brutality of the savage beasts they consumed but none of their original intelligence. One can cave in plate mail with a single strike, trample over an organized line of soldiers, and shrug off fire from a volley of arrows. However, for all their power, krootox are herbivores who prefer to graze alone unless provoked. The one exception to this rule is when they are found in kindreds. When in a kindred, krootox are mounted by skilled riders and directed into battle. Their full potential is harnessed as they trample over the kindred's enemies. If the handler is killed and the krootox is not fighting, however, the herd animal tends to wander off without much care. Experienced commanders know this and use snipers to pick off the rider before the krootox are enraged. Tactics. Krootox are simple creatures when it comes to tactics: charge at the nearest enemy, smash it to death, and repeat until safe. When found in a kindred, krootox riders will usually smash through their enemies like a typical cavalry unit, with the krootox destroying enemies through pure might and the rider attacking from its superior position. Alternatively, well-funded kindreds employ these beasts as weapons platforms, strapping oversized crossbows (or other ranged weapons) to their back so the rider can fire into battle.

Variant: Krootox Weapon Platform

The krootox weapon platform consists of a krootox with a siege crossbow mounted on its back. A creature riding the krootox can take the below action: Siege Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack. +4 to hit, range 110/440 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d8 + 2) piercing damage. In the setting of Warhammer 40,000, a krootox may be equipped with a kroot gun—effectively a stronger and larger form of the kroot rifle. Kroot Gun. Ranged Weapon Attack. +4 to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 26 (7d6 + 2) lightning damage. A creature's actual attack bonus may differ: the attack bonus is equal to the creature's proficiency bonus (if proficient with heavy crossbows) plus its dexterity modifier. Similarly, the bonus to damage is equal to the creature's dexterity modifier. The assumed to-hit and damage are for a base kroot carnivore. This variant may affect the overall difficulty of the encounter.
