Guardian Construct[edit]

"Attention men! Say hello to the Iron Fist, this thing'll be keeping you alive long enough to reach the keep. Stay behind it and let it show you how real soldiers fight, and keep far away when you start to hear the electric crackle!" - General Doran, before a victorious siege on a warlord's keep

Physical Description[edit]

Guardian Constructs share a similar appearance to Shield Guardians; a wooden frame in the shape of a normal sized humanoid using small gears and screws to allow the Construct to move its limbs around freely, underneath this wooden frame is a thin fleshy substance that works as the constructs 'brain' and keeps it fully concious. On this wooden frame metal plating has been grafted onto its arms and legs, as well as a full torso chestplate and full helmet which have heavy enchantments etched onto the insides of them to keep the Construct's body animate. The inside of the helmet casts a dark shadow, with two small glowing orbs to accommodate its lack of eyes, but is otherwise hollow.

After the creation of Shield Guardians a group of great inventors combines forces in the attempt to create a new construct that would be much easier and cheaper to create in an attempt to capitalise on a market for purchasable guards for armies for the general public. Sacrifices to a regular Shield Guardian's size, strength, and general capabilities were made but soon the Guardian Construct was created and was quickly being being sold to armies, city guards, nobleman, and business alike. Guardian Constructs were designed to adapt to the situations and dangers it would face, dependant on the job it was given; the conciousness of long dead humanoids have been grafted to conjured flesh on the inside of the construct's wooden frame. This necrotic enchantment has damaged the conciousness and erased all memory of their past life and allows the Construct's creator to reprogram it with a a basic understanding of combat and interacting with society, but also allows it to learn and adapt as any human could also.

Constructs serve as dutiful guards for whoever owns them, they are not magically bound as a Shield Guardian would be but instead programmed to actually want to serve their owners as loyally as they can, as such people tend to see these Construct's as nothing more than another enchanted item created by mages to serve them. Normally constructs follow this assumption to the letter, however some of them have been known to develop an actual identity on account of the conciousness trapped within, and soon begin acting like an actual person, developing quirks and mannerisms as people would as well as having desires and emotions.

Guardian Construct Names[edit]

Construct names are given by their creators or owners and are entirely based on the that person's whim; some use more humorous or mocking names as a way to make the construct appear more friendly in the eyes of the public, others use more official titles as a symbol of the authority and power the construct's owner has. Some construct may prefer to choose their own name, if allowed by their creator, wanting a sense of self as it makes its way in the world

Any: Junker, Scrappy, Tin Can, Steel Unit, Metal Guard

Guardian Construct Traits[edit]

Guardian Constructs are metal guards for hire; programmed for combat and dutiful protectors.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength and Dexterity are increased by 1
Age. Constructs do not age as mortals do, but may refer to the year of its construction as its 'birth' if it wishes.
Alignment. Constructs are created to guard and protect its owners and so will commonly fall under Lawful Nuetral. Some constructs however develop independence and makes its own way in the world, allowing it to fall under any alignment.
Size. Constructs are designed to all be similar in size, most commonly being 6 feet in height. As such they are medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Armoured Frame. The metal plating protecting the wooden frame underneath is not immune to time or magic; special damage such as rusting still applies and should the armour break it must find a mage or blacksmith to reconstruct the metal. It also has disadvantage to stealth rolls.
Flesh and Metal. Being a Construct it does not require food or water. However it still requires to breathe and sleep, due to the flesh substance inside the Construct's frame.
Semi-Living. As the Construct is not a proper living being it is resistant to poison damage.
Body Upgrades. Instead of using armour and weapons the Construct relies on upgrading its current frame and metal plating. The construct may not equip melee weapons or armour but instead gains improvements as it levels up. Those who wish to use something other than the Construct's unique class may forgo this rule.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write any one language and one extra language of your choice. Often a Construct will learn the second language from its creator or owner, to make communication with it easier

Suggested Characteristics[edit]

Guardian Constructs fall under two character types; those still loyal to its creator or owner, a devoted but happy servant who sees protecting those it is tasked with as it's main reason for staying animated, or those who have developed a unique personality, casting off its previous duties to find a new reason for living.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I find interacting with people a brand new experience every time, all people are unique and have something new to teach me.
2 I often forget how fragile everything around me is due to my strength, and often end up breaking things. This may sometimes include people.
3 In my past life I must have been a criminal of some kind, any time I see coins or something valuable I feel a tingle in my hands.
4 Fighting has a strange appeal to me, whenever I am ordered to fight I do so eagerly.
5 My body is a symbol of status and power; I take any opportunity to keep my armour in peak condition and polish it daily. Someone putting a dent in my armour would offend me more than any insult could.
6 I sometimes have feelings something is missing. It feels like my past life had a deep regret or a task it was never able to complete.
7 The passage of time is lost on me. I can guard a building for years without realizing it, and humans having to constantly stop and rest so often seems like an alien concept.
8 I was built to fight, and to kill, and to obey the ones who created me. I am disgusted by all of these things.
d6 Ideal
1 Protection (Good): I was built to protect others, and protect other I shall. Should someone fall under my care, I have failed my purpose in life.
2 Duty to Law (Lawful): I was built to uphold the law and stop crime in its tracks. My views on crime may be black and white, but that is what is necessary to stop all forms of corruption.
3 Guardsmen (Nuetral): I was built with a simple job; to guard things. Be it a person, a house, or an empire. I find little interest in doing anything other than following this task.
4 Identity (Nuetral): I was built, but not born. I yearn to find out who I was before all of this, and have set out to find my true identity.
5 Freedom (Chaotic): Whatever I was built for no longer matters now. I am free from the chains that created me, and none shall ever hold command over me again, and I wish to enjoy freedom to the fullest.
6 Power (Evil): I was built for war, to fight an army and survive. I enjoy the slaughter and wish to fight as much as possible to become more powerful.
d6 Bond
1 Whoever I am created or owned by is the only person worth respecting. No one but this person deserves my attention, and their life is more important than my own.
2 The weak and the powerless often seem to be oppressed more than those I was tasked with protecting. They should be the ones I should always try to aid when needed, the strong can fend for themselves.
3 People do not care for me, I am just another thing to them. The only person I can ever rely on is myself, and this armoured body.
4 I feel pity for the other constructs and creatures I see during my travels; they can never experience life like I can. I advocate for improving their personal care and hate any who mistreat them.
5 I was once hired by a small band of knights for a dangerous mission. The knights treated me as a fellow person and I never forgot these people after the job was done, I would love to see them again someday.
6 During my lifespan small animals seem to find appeal in resting on or under my body. I have decided to adopt some of these animals, and keep them safe as I would any person, maybe I shall even give them names.
d6 Flaw
1 I was programmed to follow my orders to the letter, regardless of any circumstances. If someone tries to rob the store I am guarding to feed his starving family, my only concern is to stop the stop the robbery.
2 I have no sympathy for the plights of man, they are the ones who must worry about these things, all I care about is the task I was given being fulfilled.
3 I never asked to be created in this form, I miss the life I have lost. I suffer a depression that no amount of jobs will distract me from.
4 I am strong, I am indestructible. No danger scares me, I will run head first into the jaws of a dragon without a second thought.
5 I fear whoever I was in my past life was a heartless creature of a man. The sight of blood brings me joy, the sound of snapping bones is ecstasy. I am afraid of what I am truly capable of if I gave into these feelings.
6 Something went wrong with the creation of my body. Loud sounds vibrate through me like shrieks, smells are wrong and smell foul, my sense of touch feels numbed, and I have trouble speaking in a clear manner.

The Guardian class is a unique class designed to work alongside the lore of a Guardian Construct; it is a mix of fighter and monk making the Construct more proficient at fighting as well as using a few unique abilities based off its body and creation. Players may instead use a normal class instead of this, but this class allows for some more unique experiences more fitting of its race. Construct Guardians were built to be a multi-purpose being capable of becoming more proficient in whatever tasks it is needed for. Be it warfare, protecting a business, keeping someone safe, or simply carrying the heavy things for a lazy mage the Construct slowly learns to adapt to better suit these needs. The starting frame Constructs are built with has the most basic programming, functions, and equipment to help reduce the costs of creating it however as it begins advancing in certain tasks the magic animating it will begin reshaping the wooden frame and armour to accommodate these needs.

Creating a Guardian[edit]

What was your Constructs task? Was it made to fight alongside soldiers in a great war, to work for a wizard as a personal guard and servant, or to keep civilians safe from bandits and care for their families needs? Maybe it no longer has this purpose, and has attained true independence and wishes to find a new purpose for its existence.

Combat Knowledge[edit]

You have been given a minor knowledge of combat using the Construct to use it to its best potential. The subconscious will also study the Construct's fighting patterns and slowly improve upon itself to reach higher skills of fighting. You gain the following benefits: You can use Dexterity or Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed attacks. You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed attacks. This die changes as you gain Guardian levels, as shown in the Combat Knowledge column of the Guardian table. When you use the Attack action with an unarmed attack, you can make one unarmed attack as a bonus action.

Defence Knowledge[edit]

You have been given a minor knowledge defending itself and relying on the armour plating to protect its wooden frame. The subconscious will also study the Construct's defensive patterns to help defend itself better in future combat. Instead of equipping armour your AC improves as you level your character, as shown in the Defence Knowledge column of the Guardian table. You are still able to wear other protective equipment such as belts, rings, or gauntlets.

Energy Charges[edit]

The magic that keeps the Construct animate does more than simply allow it to move; over time it builds up a small surplus of energy that it may use to give itself a boost when performing certain tasks. Certain abilities the construct has will use a number of charges, as specified in the abilities description, to give it additional benefits or attacks during combat. The number of charges a Construct has is 10, 5 charges are regained after a short rest, and all charges are regained after a long rest.

Magic runes are intricately etched into the woodwork and inside the metal plating that protects the Construct allowing it to draw on magical energies to help repair damages it has received over time. You gain the following benefits: During short and long rests you may use hit die to heal the Construct the same as any other race would. During combat on your turn may use a bonus action and 1 Energy Charge to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your Guardian level. Once you use this feature you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Pack Mule[edit]

You have gotten use to being the one tasked with carrying all of the equipment for yourself and your fellow travellers. The heavy load that once weighed you down is starting to feel much lighter than it once did. Beginning at 2nd level You are only encumbered when carrying a weight 10 times your Strength score, and only heavily encumbered when carrying a weight 15 times your Strength score.

Frame Refitting[edit]

At 3rd level, you may choose a new body frame that better suits some of the tasks a Construct would be needed for. Choose Metal Warden or Battle Unit, all details at the end of the class description. The frame you choose grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 10, 15th, and 18th level.

Ability Score Improvement[edit]

When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Rune Guard[edit]

You have fully become accustomed to your body and the armour you wear, allowing the magic that animates you to flow freely without any restrictions blocking it. Beginning at 5th level, your unarmed attacks and armour are classed as magical.

The energy stored with in you is more than simple magic to keep animated, it is a weapon when used correctly. When the moment is right you have learned to channel this energy through the Construct's body into another person. Beginning at 9th level, before an attack you may use 1 Energy Charge; if the attack is successful apply additional 1dX electric damage to the enemy, if the attack fails the charge is still used without applying damage. Damage applied is always 2 points lover than the die roll for Combat Knowledge. Using an additional charge you can also make a ranged attack roll to target any creature within 5ft of the original target to affect them as well, damage applied drops an additional 2 for each target so if a first target is hit with a melee attack that deals 1d8 damage the second target would be hit with a ranged attack dealing 1d6 electric damage and a third would receive 1d4 electric damage and so on, and can continue onto additional targets using additional Energy Charges. These ranged attacks can be used up until a ranged attack roll is failed, all charges are used, there are no currently unaffected creatures within range, or damage would drop below 1d2.

Combat Ready[edit]

You have become more proficient in using the Construct for battling, movement feels as natural as it would in a real body, and your attacks have increased in speed. Beginning at 11th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. The number of attacks increases to three when you reach 17th level in this class.

Energy Overload[edit]

You feel your body merging itself with the magic that surrounds your as you travel, drawing strength wherever you go. Magic flows through you as air through a mortal. Beginning at 13th level, your Energy Charges is increased from 10 to 15.

Size Matters[edit]

You've learned how to throw your weight around and use your metal body to its fullest to gain advantage over creatures smaller than you. Beginning at 15th level, your melee attacks have advantage against any targets who have the small or smaller size.

Siege Machine[edit]

Your current frame can no longer contain the raw energy stored within you now, you have achieved the pinnacle of your Construct's potential and require something stronger. Your frame and metal plates begin to expand with the aid of magic to accommodate for this need. Beginning at 20th level, your size is increased to Large, and the Size Matters feature now applies to medium creatures as well.

Metal Warden[edit]

A frame designed to be used by city guards and large populations as a portable defence to both shield and keep them out of harms way, this new frame has additional metal plating covering its entire frame now with additional warding to ensure the construct can run head first into a conflict to protect as many people as possible. The concious also starts developing a sense of purpose to protect those in need, and especially those it is loyal to to a near self-destructive level. Nothing is more important now than keeping those it wants to keep safe alive, to fail in this task would mean a personal loss of purpose and that is no longer a risk it will take.

Steel Wall

The metal plating covering your whole body makes you as sturdy as any solid wall would be, and those around you have noticed such. Beginning at 3rd level allies may use you as cover.

Revival Knowledge

You have learned sometimes your body alone is not enough to properly protect those you are sworn to protect, and sometimes in more serious situations more powerful skills are required to keep people alive. Beginning at 7th level, you may use 1 Energy Charge to stabilize a creature that has 0 hitpoints, without needing to make a medicine check, and can use 2 Energy Charges to use your Reconstruction ability on allies.

Protection Knowledge

You have begun developing an understanding of using your Construct as a method of protecting those around you, using your sturdier form as a way to keep them alive. Beginning at 10th level, you may use your reaction and 1 Energy Charge whenever an ally within 10 feet of you is about to receive damage. Half of the damage they receive is applied to yourself instead, rounded down.

Meteorite Coating

Your metal plates have been upgraded using metals from a fallen meteorite, an incredibly sturdy metal granting great durability. Beginning at 18th level, you receive only standard damage from critical attacks, and can use 3 Energy Charges to grant resistance to any damage type for 1 hour.

Battle Unit[edit]

A frame designed designed for use by soldiers for the use of warfare and sieges against supposedly impenetrable fortresses the Construct is built to be a walking armoury made to take an small armies alone and be the last one standing. Liquidized metal has been stormed into the hands of the Construct that allows for additional combat styles, and the Construct has been redesigned to use Energy Charges to give you a boost in combat. The concious also begins developing a love for combat and has a resolve that could even surpass war veterans when it battling groups of enemies, and sees it easier to protect people simply by fighting anything that looks like it could be a threat.

Mesh Plates

The liquid metal inside the hands of the Construct can reshape itself into weaponry to be more versatile at different forms of combat, and can even forcefully shoot metal shards out the palm of its hand. Beginning at 3rd level, using a minor action you may form your hands into bladed instruments, changing your damage to piercing or slashing, and may be removed at will. This feature allows provides up to 20 darts in the Constructs body which reform after a short or long rest. These darts fall to pieces shortly after leaving the body, usually a few moments after piercing a creature.

Kinetic Knowledge

You have found yourself forming additional kinetic energy from the movements made during combat, and have worked out how to use this additional power to give yourself a form of adrenaline rush. Beginning at 7th level, any time an enemy is slain by the Construct during combat your gain +1 to all attack rolls, stacking up to +3. These attack roll boosts wear off after a full minute without combat.

Warfare Knowledge

You have developed a full knowledge on the art of warfare; you understand the concept of battling multiple opponents and gained full awareness of the constant dangers around you. Beginning at 10th level, you are no longer surprised by combat encounters, and enemies no longer gain advantage to attack rolls when flanking you.

Full discharge

You are a walking mass of power; you feel the energy coursing through your hands as every step you take makes crackles of energy spark across your armour. Beginning at 15th level, the first use of Discharge applies the same damage as Combat Knowledge, but continues lowering by two for every additional target.
