Seven years after the Cell Games, a 16 year old Gohan had given up on his training, only being kept at the same power by his growing physique and the occasional bout against normal criminals, instead taking the opportunity to enjoy his time at Orange Star High School. However, when one of his classmates, Videl deduced that Gohan must be the mysterious "Golden Fighter" through a series of mishaps and her father's private stories of the Cell Games, she blackmailed him into teaching her the art of ki and entering the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament alongside her, though he would have regardless after being contacted by his late father, who told him he would spend his 1 day returning to the land of the living fighting in said tournament. However, when Videl, whom he had secretly developed an affection for, was savagely beaten by Spopovich far beyond necessity, Gohan became enraged, promising to pay him back while Goku retrieved 3 senzu beans. In his first match, Gohan was set against Shin, a strange newcomer who revealed himself to be the Supreme Kai. However, when he was tricked into transforming into a Super Saiyan, though he increased this to Super Saiyan 2 out of his own pride, both Spopovich and Yamu leaped into the ring, stealing Gohan's energy, all in order for the kai to track them back to their master's ship to ensure Majin Buu could not revive. Not wishing to miss out on a fight, the three saiyans, Vegeta included, assisted the Supreme Kai, taking on Babidi's minions one at a time. The final fighter, Gohan was set to fight Dabura, and while he was more than able to defeat the demon king, his lack of motivation left Vegeta enraged, allowing Babidi to take control. With the last two full-blooded saiyans leaving to settle their own rivalry, Gohan and Shin continued deeper into the ship. However, before Babidi could be stopped, the ongoing battle of the Super Saiyan 2's spiked Majin Buu's container's power storage. In one last attempt, Gohan fired a Kamehameha at the pod, to no effect. In his opening assault at Babidi's order, both Gohan and Shin were beaten to near death, using their last moments to teleport to the Land of the Kais in a last-ditch effort for power, pulling the Z Sword. Pulling the sword, Gohan almost immediately shattered it in training, to everyone's dismay, but ultimately to the benefit of the universe as doing so freed Old Kai. After a grueling 5 hour ritual, the epic depths of Gohan's power was revealed, though at the cost of most of the Earth's inhabitants. Moments before he could finish of Super Buu, the crafty majin absorbed Gotenks, surpassing even Gohan in power and quickly defeating and absorbing him, though Vegito would ultimately free him. In one timeline, Gohan would allow himself to peak yet again, falling back to his Cell Saga strength until getting his act together before the Tournament of Power, while in another, he would continue to train, easily surpassing even Vegito for the rest of his life.
