I also play a PC while I DM, mainly out of necessity(not enough players) and I reccomend playing a support role! As long as you're not the first or the last PC in battle formation you can usually avoid making important decisions. 'Cause let's face it, you know there's a trap behind that door, or an enemy in that room!
