[edit] (Spell School) Arcanist

Magic, the essance of all life.

For the arcanist, especially, this is true. Arcanists are born of powerful magic, having the innate ability to channel one school with perfection. They rarely can learn spells from any other school without first weakening their primary, and some even forsake magic completely to follow other schools of combat.

[edit] Making an Arcanist

Arcanists are more suited to mid-long range combat. Though they learn to use their magic through specially prepared weapons, all but the invo-arcanist usually dos not have the AC to survive in close range combat.

Ability Scores: Intelligence and Constitution are both equally important, followed by Dexterity and Wisdom

Races: Any race can be born with these abilities, however you should make sure that your campaign can handle any race other than human.

Alignment: Any.

Starting Gold: 6d4×10 gp (150 gp).

Starting Age: Moderate.

[edit] Class Features

All of the following are class features of the battlemage.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Arcanists Have no proficiencies with armor of any kind. As for weapons, they have access to the followint selection: Long Sword, Short Sword, Katana, Wakizashi, Three Section Staff, Quarter Staff, Dagger, Dart, Knife.

Spells: Arcanists focus energy into spells like a sorcerer. As such they do not need Spell books.


Arcane Charge: Arcane charge allows the Arcanist to recharge magical items created by other arcanists. The level of this ability dictates how many charges each item he owns gains per hour of sleep. This ability is one of the biggest reasons that Arcanists will only use Arcanist created magic items.


Arcane Shield: The Arcanist causes a shield of concentrated Arcane energy to form a shield on his off-hand, adding +2 to his AC for 1 attack per 3 levels.


Arcanist Empowerment: This ability allows the Arcanist to add his age to the damage of his spells this however, has a penalty, you can only add a max of 10 to the spells, meaning that your character, can only be ten years old or younger. for example, Mizore, a human child casts magic missle at level 1. dmg is 1d4+1, but because of the empowerment it could be 1d4+11 instead, still a considerable increase, but much less overpowered then the previous creators idea.


Arcane Ability 1-6: This is perhaps one of the arcanists best abilities. It allows him to make one spell, equal in level to the rank of this ability, a spell-like ability that is usable 3/day. The ability does damage as the spell would normally do for the Arcanist, if it is a damaging spell, adding their age to the numerical value of the spell.


Arcane Line: Causes a beam of concentrated arcane energy to fire at the opponent. This line does 1d8 damage for every 4 levels of the Arcanist.


Arcane Armor 1-3: Causes a sheath of arcane energy to enshroud the Arcanist, granting +2 AC for each level of the ability. The shroud lasts for 10 minutes/5 levels.


Arcanist Sword 1-2: Though it is called "Arcanist Sword" This ability applies to the weapon of the arcanist. It allows him/her to encase the weapon in the effects of one of the spells that they have selected as an "arcane ability" to do extra damage. This effect lasts for 10 minutes for each rank of "Arcanist Sword".

Weapons: Long Sword (1d8/x2, 5 ft. reach, 3 lb., one-handed, Slashing).

Skill Selection: Pick a number of skills equal to 4 + Int modifier.

Feat: SRD:Quicken Spell.

Bonus Feats: SRD:Scribe Scroll (Human).

Gear: Backpack, Tinderbox, Small Sack, Waterskin, Bed Roll, 3x Parchment, 2 quills, 1 steel vial black ink, Scroll Case, '50 Hemp Rope, Grappling Hook. Signet Ring (Arcanist Signet)

Gold: 6d4x10 gp.

[edit] Playing an Arcanist

Religion: Most Arcanists Worship Boccob or Vecna, dependant on their alignment. They thank given divine being daily for putting them above other spellcasters.

Other Classes: Arcanists can be found working with any class, but they are uncomfortable with wizards, as they believe themselves to be above them. They get along with Specialists fairly well and sorcerers as well, Considering specialists to be "little brothers" and Sorcerers to be kindred spirits since they are born with their magic.

Combat: An Arcanist can fill the roll of a normal wizard, specializing in one school is rarely a disadvantage.

Advancement: An Arcanist can not multi-class into any other arcane spell casting class. They may take combat or divine classes as suppliments to Arcanist, but they will always look apon others with a mild distain.

Your a what? A wizard? And you think you have a chance?
—Caesar Greenfield, Elven Invo-Arcanist (lv 5, 170 years of age), Talking to a level 20 wizard before a spell duel, but after casting "Mage Armor".

Arcanists generally avoid lives of adventure, preferring to spend their lives in devotion to their school and creating magic items for later use/sale.

Daily Life: A typical day for an Arcanist usually involves waking up, exercising lightly, magic study, taking requests for magical items, then going to bed.

Notables: Caesar Greenfield, Currently a lv 18 Invo-Arcanist (184 years old)/ lv 15 Warrior. He single-handedly took on the avatar of Vecna, almost dying in the battle, but setting Vecna's plans back 100 years.

Organizations: None. Arcanists only get in contact with each other if they have need of a special magical item from another school.

NPC Reactions: NPC's usually think of Arcanists as a normal spellcaster. The exception is wizards, who knowing how Arcanists feel about them, look at them with distrust.
