The moment you see the blot of darkness appear before you, a pair of menacing red eyes flashing within, you feel both terrified and vindicated. You were right! Something was out to get you after all!

A hunch is a mysterious creature that represents the unfathomable terrors which fuel a paranoid mind. It is unknown from where they originate, but their habit of stalking and annihilating those who spend too much time preparing for unseen terrors has made them, ironically, the subject of innumerable conspiracy theories.

Though it typically appears only at the moment of attack and concealed within a cloud of magical darkness, a hunch in its natural form appears as a vaguely goblin-like creature made out of solidified dark mist with hellish red eyes and a mouthful of razor sharp fangs that perpetually leers and grins in taunt at its victims.


Combat[edit]

The hunch remains invisible until it attacks, at which point it will typically (if not simultaneously) cast darkness to hide itself before firing a scorching ray on opponents that have been demoralized with its’ What You Don’t Know special attack.

See In Darkness (Su): A hunch can see perfectly in darkness of any kind, even that created by a darkness spell.

Unreal Aura (Su): A hunch’s nightmarish composure is innately alien to waking creatures and they have a difficult time believing in its existence. Anyone not asleep, under the effects of an enchantment spell, or otherwise impeded from fully utilizing their conscious mind suffers a 20% miss chance on all attacks against a hunch.

What You Don’t Know (Su): Those who are aware of a hunch’s presence are seized with an irrational fear of the unknown and must make a Will save (DC 17) or be shaken for as long as the hunch remains within range of their senses, natural or otherwise.

Spell-Like Abilities: At will—scorching ray, 1/day—invisibility, darkness. CL 5th.

  • Hunches receive a +4 racial bonus on Intimidate checks.
