History[edit]

One wizard, one vampire, this princess of horror has declared a war against a continent. All its kingdoms, and all its churches made an alliance to defeat her. They managed to defeat her, but their loss was a third of all living in it. And she escaped... One of vampire goddess Shilah's special artifact that she has forged in the time between her life of humanity and her life of deity, this mystical bell induces fear so great that, eventually no one dares to possess it.

Description[edit]

This bell is roughly 6 inches long, and has no clapper within its cup-shaped body. It is made from a black metal (thought to be originally adamantine), and is almost indestructible. It has 8 carvings resembling infant's face that circle around it. Inside the mouth, it can be seen that the inside is lined with small spikes, although it is not sharp enough to injure anyone who tries to stick their fingers in it. It has an aura of evil around it, and creatures with good alignment within 60 feet of it can immediately tell. If they (or anyone who has attempted to detect the bell's alignment) try to touch it, they must succeed on a will save of 39 or immediately let go and become panicked. Even with a save, they are shaken. Evil creatures and neutral creatures who has no clue what this artifact is not affected by this mind-affecting effect.

The owner of this bell can choose one target and ring this bell. The bell's 8 face moves as if alive and screams a horrific tone that can be heard only by the target, affecting the target as if by the Phantasmal Killer spell. The user only needs to succeed a DC14 use magic device check in order to do so, and the initial save DC is 22 for both will and fortitude regardless of the user's level/status. The range of this effect is 60 feet, and the user does not hear the bell's sound nor see a vague shape as in phantasmal killer... until the target succeed the will save.

Once the target succeeds the will save, the user is now the new target of its effect, and now the DC for will is what the original target rolled for the will save. The DC for fortitude does not change, but the damage increases by 1d6 for a successful fortitude save. If the user succeeds the will save, the original target is once again the target of this effect, once again with higher DC will and additional 1d6 damage for successful save. This effect does not end until one of the two fails the will save and devours the victim in an unimaginable horror.

The owner of this bell is target to nightmares caused by this bell. Every time the owner tries to take a rest, he/she must make a will save or become affected by an effect similar to the nightmare spell (prevents restful sleep, causes 1d10 points of damage, leaves the subject fatigued, unable to regain arcane spells for the next 24 hours), as terrible image invade the owner's mind. The save DC is 27. If the owner hasn't used the bell since his/her last rest, the will save modifier is -5. Every time the user succeeds with this save, the will save modifier is additional -1 until the user fails. If the owner have slain with this bell, the will save modifier is +1 for each creature slain. If the owner doesn't sleep, the owner is nonetheless affected by the nightmare; a flash of image disrupts the owner once per day (will save modifier is x2).

The effects of this bell overcomes immunity against fear and immunity against mind-affecting effect given from an external source. Only when the target is mindless (and thus immune to mind-affecting effect to begin with) are they immune to the bell's effect. If the user directs the bells effect against such target, the target gets an automatic save for the will. Such creatures cannot be the owner of this bell.

Summary[edit]

This is a bell that allows the user to cast phantasmal killer at will. The owner is subject to nightmare everyday.
