Yathrinshee[edit]

Few truly know the secrets of abjuration, few can see it as a gift from the gods as well as a source of power from within, but one cannot reach true understanding without that. Indeed trying to understand from only one end is like only looking at one side of a coin.
—Meyil, Drow Yathrinshee, Words of Warding: a Treatise on Abjuration

Powerful casters who truly wish to understand a school of magic may approach it from both the divine and arcane ends, those who do take upon the handle of the Yathrinshee.

Becoming a Yathrinshee[edit]

Most who try to become Yathrinshees are Wizard/Archivists though other combinations such as Wizard/Cleric or even Wizard/Druids are not unheard of. Anyone who wishes to truly understand a school of magic can become a Yathrinshee.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Yathrinshee.

Spellcasting: At each level, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in both an arcane and a divine spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one divine or arcane spellcasting class before becoming a Yathrinshee, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Specialist: When you take your first level of Yathrinshee pick a school of magic, from then on whenever you cast a spell from the chosen school of magic all of you spellcasting classes' caster levels add together to determine the caster level of the spell from that school. ex. A Wiz5/Clr5/Yat2 specializing in evocation casts a fireball, the fireball has an effective caster level of 14 (7 wiz+7 clr = 14) and so will deal the maximum of 10d6 damage

School bonus:When you choose your specialization school the Yathrinshee gets a bonus ability depending on the school chosen:

Abjuration (ex): While in an Antimagic field you may still cast a spell or use a spell-like or supernatural ability if you succeed on a level check (1d20+ability score modifier+Abjuration caster level vs a DC of 15+AMF caster level) You may use this ability a number of times per day equal to your Yathrinshee level

Conjuration (sp): You may summon a number of helpful companions to aid you for 10*Conjuration caster level minutes. The creatures cannot have more HD than you have Yathrinshee levels nor can their number exceed your Yathrinshee levels.

Divination (sp): You may perfectly identify everything about one item (Location, ownership, properties, etc.) by focusing on it (1 standard action) and succeeding on a divination check (1d20+ability score modifier+Divination caster level) with DC equal to 20 for a regular item increasing by +2 for each of the following conditions: on a different plane, owner trying to hide it, obscure item (-2 if its of artifact level in power). You may use this ability a number of times per day equal to your Yathrinshee level, but using it on the same item confers a cumulative +1 penalty to the DC as the item becomes inured to your attempts to pry into it

Enchantment (ex): Instead of making a diplomacy check you may make an enchantment check (1d20+ability score modifier+enchantment caster level) in all ways this behaves like a diplomacy check. You may do this a number of times per day equal to your Yathrinshee level

Evocation (sp): You may create an explosive burst of energy in a single target, dealing 1d8 of damage (SR applies and the subject may make a fortitudde save for half damage) for each of your evocation caster levels. You must be able to see the target and they must be within 30+10 per evocation caster level feet of you. You may use this ability a number of times per day equal to your caster level.

Illusion (su): If someone successfully disbelieves one of your illusions you may immediately make an illusion check (1d20+ability score+illusion caster level) opposed by their will save, success means that they fail to disbelieve. (you may use this a number of times per day equal to your Yathrinshee level) As long as you still have uses available you are immediately notified if an opportunity to do so arises (someone disbelieves one of your illusions)

Necromancy (su): You may turn/rebuke undead as a cleric of your Yathrinshee level (If you have cleric levels they stack with your Yathrinshee levels)

Transmutation (sp): You may assume a form with no more HD than your effective Transmutation caster level. You may do this one per day for a number of hours equal to your Yathrinshee level, treat this like a polymorph spell without restrictions on form assumed.

No Prohibitions: All spells you cast of your non specialized school get a +1 to caster level (this is applied after you add both classes casting abilities together)

Improved Specialist: All spells you cast of your specialized school get a +2 bonus to caster level (this is applied after you add both classes casting abilities together)

Specialized Metamagic: You may spend 2 prepared spells from a school that isn't your specialized school to apply metamagic spontaneously to prepared spells of your metamagic school. You may do the same with spell slots if you don't prepare spells, doing so makes the metamagic spell take a full round to cast as normal. (ex an evoker specialist wishes to cast a maximized chain lightning, she expends dimensional anchor and fire trap to spontaneously maximize the chain lightning)

Perfected specialization: You may select one spell from each level from your chosen school. Thereafter you may convert prepared spells into the chosen spells at will. If you do not prepare spells you may instead learn spells from your chosen school as a wizard does. (ex. a conjuration specialist sorcerer encounters a scroll of Summon Monster II thereafter he spends 8 hours studying and commits it to memory thereafter they may spontaneously cast Summon Monster II)

The epic Yathrinshee gains a bonus feat (selected from the list of epic Yathrinshee feats) every 4 levels after 20.

Epic Yathrinshee Bonus Feat List: Automatic Quicken Spell, Automatic Silent Spell, Automatic Still Spell, Combat Casting, Enhance Spell, Epic Spell Focus, Epic Spell Penetration, Epic Spellcasting, Ignore Material Components, Improved Combat Casting, Improved Heighten Spell, Improved Metamagic, Improved Spell Capacity, Intensify Spell, Multispell, Permanent Emanation, Spell Focus, Spell Knowledge, Spell Mastery, Spell Penetration, Spell Stowaway, Spell Opportunity, Spontaneous Spell, Tenacious Magic.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Yathrinshee[edit]

Combat: Though they can fight in melee a Yathrinshee's true power comes when they are allowed to sit on the back lines utilizing their impresive repertoire of spells

Advancement: Yathrinshee typically advance in their base classes though many also take levels of mystic theurge for more dual progression, or red wizard for a more complete understanding of their chosen school.

Resources: Yathrinshee are more than willing to share knowledge of their schools with each other though rarely do two wandering Yathrinshee share a passion for the same one.

Yathrinshee Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Arcana), and Knowledge (Religion) or Knowledge (Nature) can research Yathrinshee to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge(Arcana), Knowledge (Religion) or Knowledge (Nature)
DC Result
11 Yathrinshee try to study their chosen school from both the arcane and divine side
16 Yathrinshee gain a supreme understanding of their school giving them unusual power
21 Yathrinshee who study different schools are radically different in their specialties, almost to the point of being different classes.
26 Yathrinshee who perfect their study become able to control the flow of their chosen school of magic
