Way of the Guardian (Revised)[edit]

Way of the Guardian[edit]

The Monastic Tradition of the Guardian specializes in the use of shields in tandem with other monastic abilities. A Guardian disciplines themselves in the use of the shield, valuing the defense of others as a noble purpose.

Aegis[edit]

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with the shield and are able to use it as a monk weapon without affecting unarmored defense. In your hands, it counts as a finesse weapon that uses your martial arts dice for damage of the appropriate type of damage (bludgeoning for a simple bash, slashing if its bladed, piercing if it's spiked). You are able to use it in place of unarmed strikes and flurry of blows.

Bulwark[edit]

Also at 3rd level, you gain advantage on checks and saves to resist being grappled, restrained, forcibly moved or knocked prone. You also gain the Protector Fighting Style.

Thrown Aegis[edit]

At 6th level, your shield can be used as a thrown weapon (with a range of 30/90). If your last attack with the shield misses, it doesn't return to you, otherwise it returns to you immediately after the last attack, provided you have an empty hand and it has a clear path.

You can ricochet your shield for additional attacks against creatures within range using your Extra Attack and Flurry of Blows features, or if you gain additional attacks by other means (such as through haste).

Attacks made with your shield are considered magical for purposes of overcoming resistance and immunity.

Guardian[edit]

At 11th level, you can spend 2 ki points as a bonus action to cast the Compelled Duel, Warding Bond or Heroism spells.

Bastion[edit]

At 17th level, while holding your Aegis, you gain resistance to all nonmagical damage, and you also gain temporary HP equal to your Monk Level + Wisdom modifier, after a short or long rest.
