Kitsune Traits[edit]

When foxes live beyond the age of fifty, they begin to develop supernatural powers and are considered Kitsune.
Ability Score Increase. Kitsune share the cunning and agility of their normal fox brethren. Kitsune get +2 to wisdom or intelligence and +1 to dexterity. When in Human Form get +2 Charisma.
Age. Kitsune may live to an extremely old age, possibly indefinetely, but they do not start developing their supernatural abilities until they are at least fifty.
Alignment. Overall, Kitsune do not have a tendency toward good or evil. Some Kitsune act as dutiful protectors and some act as malevolent spirits whose actions only harm those around them. As notorious tricksters, Kitsune tend towards chaos over law. Some Kitsune overcome this chaotic urge and follow personal rules and guidelines, though these tend to not match the laws of the land.
Size. Actual Kitsune tend to be the size of normal foxes. Your size is tiny.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.
Fox Form. Kitsune are foxes. This means that they are considered beasts while in their natural form. All armor they wear must be designed to fit them, unless it is magical. Magical armor and clothing reshapes itself to fit your fox body. Additionally, they do not have hands in their natural form and must manipulate everything with their mouths, including weapons. You may speak any language you are proficient in and cast any spells you know. While in fox form you gain advantage on any perception checks that rely on hearing. Also while in fox form you gain the cantrip Minor Illusion permanently until you switch out of fox form.
Nine Tails. Through age and experience, Kitsune gain additional tails, up to nine total. Kitsune tend to gain tails at least every hundred years. What these tails do and when you get them are entirely up to the DM. The effects of the tails should only be positive and may be given instead of a comparable magic item.
Human Form. Kitsune have the ability to take on a specific human form. Using an action, you may transform into a fully clothed human for an indefinite amount of time. You always transform into the same human form. Your size becomes medium, your walking speed becomes 30 feet, and you are consider a human for the purpose of spells and spell like abilities, but you retain all of your other stats, including current health and ability scores. You keep none of the equipment you possessed in your original form, except for magical items. While in this form, you may wield any weapons and wear any armor that you are proficient in as if you were a human. Someone may be able to tell that you are not an actual human with a DC15 perception check. A successful check hints at your true form, but does not reveal it. The person making the check might catch a brief glimpse of one of your tails or maybe sees your shadow as that of a foxes for a second. You may revert back to your fox form any time you like, but must spend an action to do so. When you revert to fox form, all of the equipment you had in human form falls to the ground around you and you regain the equipment you had before your transformation.
Actual Kitsune Darkvision. Because foxes are primarily nocturnal, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Actual Kitsune Truesight. Due to your magical nature, you have the ability to see the world as it really is. At level 1 you can see normally in magical darkness out to 40 feet as if the area was in bright light. At level 3, when you are within 30 feet of a visual illusion you automatically detect their true nature and succeed on saving throws against them. Also, within 20 feet you determine the true form of a shapechanger or a creature transformed by magic. At level 5, when you are within 25 feet of an invisible creature or a magically hidden door or object, you can see them. At level 15, double the range of all of your Actual Kitsune Truesight abilities.
Fox Fire. Kitsune are known to be able to produce fire. Blue fire innate to the Kitsune race can be conjured as a bonus action either at the tip of your tail or your paws/hands. When used as an attack causes 2d6 fire damage at first level. At 3rd level 3d6, at 5th level 4d6 and so on. At level 20 becomes 12d8. You can also use your tail to throw the flame and when in fox form, the flame floats beside you when conjured since you lack hands. Your spell casting ability score for this spell is wisdom or charisma.
Skill Versatility. You gain proficiency in three skills of your choice and one extra that is different or a disadvantage when in Human Form.(Confer with DM whether different or disadvantage)
Actual Kitsune Trance. Through age and experience you have gained wisdom and no longer require a full long rest in order to recuperate. The duration of your long rest is halved along with your short rest time. While in Human Form this effect is lessened and you must still complete a long rest but for half of it you may craft or complete other mildly strenuous activities such as researching a new spell or keeping watch for four hours instead of two, not extremely physical actions. (Confer with DM for your freedom of choice beyond these examples.)
