Troll Hunter[edit]

—Hans, Norwegian Troll Hunter, Trolljegeren

Troll Hunters combine the skills of a ranger with the ability to smite and calcify trolls. They usually are loners, hunting down very small groups of trolls, but they may team together with other adventurers or Troll Hunters to take down larger groups.

Becoming a Troll Hunter[edit]

Troll Hunters are usually melee fighters, so strength is important, ranged fighters use dexterity instead. A high constitution allows the Troll Hunter to survive in a battle against a troll with a high regeneration. Charisma is the key ability of the Troll Hunter's Smite and Calcify abilities, so a high Charisma is a plus.

Class Features[edit]

Smite Troll: At first level a Troll Hunter gains the ability to smite a troll with a single melee attack or a ranged attack, provided the troll is within 30 ft. If the Troll Hunter attacks a creature that is not a troll then the Smite is wasted. The Smite Troll ability gives the Troll Hunter a bonus to hit equal to his Charisma bonus and a bonus to damage equal to 1d4 per Troll Hunter level.

Dark Sight: A Troll Hunter's eyes adapt to better match the prey he hunts. His eyes become glossy and blackish, and he gains Dark Vision 60 ft and Low-light Vision.

Favored Enemy (Troll): The Troll Hunter gains a +2 to Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Survival against trolls, and a +2 to all damage he deals to trolls. This stacks with "Favored Enemy (Giant)" if the troll is of the Giant type.

Troll Scent: When a troll attempts to "smell" a Troll Hunter of level 4 or higher, the troll identifies the Troll Hunter as a troll of that troll's species. This can be masked if the Troll Hunter has some sort of other overwhelming scent, such as perfume. The Troll Hunter also gains a scent ability himself, and troll scent is considered an overwhelming scent for the Troll Hunter.

Improved Favored Enemy (Troll): Troll Hunters can better hunt their prey at level 6, gaining an additional +2 to attack and damage against trolls and troll-kin.

Calcify Troll: At level 10 a Troll Hunter gains the ability to purify a troll's body and turn them to stone. 1/day a Troll Hunter can smite a troll and add a Calcify affect. If the troll is deal damage by the attack then it must roll a fortitude (DC 15+Troll Hunter Level+Cha Mod) or turn to stone as the "Flesh to Stone" spell.
