Talk:Recovery Blade (5e Spell)

From D&D Wiki

I see several balance problems with this spell:

  • Like almost every health-stealing homebrew ever made, this can easily be exploited for globs of out-of-battle healing. One can deal damage to mundane objects easily, and this doesn't specify one doesn't regain hit points from breaking glass or stabbing a sack of kittens. Even assuming average damage and no other exploitation, one could stab 10 kittens in 1 minute to regain on average of over 100 hit points, and you're likely to get more than 10 extra temporary hit points too.
  • Even if it wasn't for the factor above, this spell is a bit broken for 3rd level even as intended. Compare recovery blade to magic weapon. One is 3rd level, and the other is 2nd. Despite only a level difference, the effects are miles apart. Needless to say +1 to attack and damage rolls is far less than +10 (average) to damage rolls plus hit point stealing. Importantly, that spell requires concentration, which is a huge balancing factor for spells.
  • I don't think I need to explain how a spell which enables you to regain spell slots is incredibly exploitable. It doesn't help that this spell currently doesn't specify the level(s) of slots recovered.

I'm not sure how to balance this spell without utterly changing it. If someone wants to try, it might be worth consulting the 5e Spell Design Guide. - Guy 13:00, 2 May 2019 (MDT)

In light of recent edits, I'd like to suggest the following version.

{{5e Spell
|name=Recovery Blade
|school= Necromancy
|lvl= 3rd
|casttime= 1 action
|range=Self
|comp= V, M (a bladed weapon)
|dur={{5E|Concentration}}, up to 1 minute
|summary=You regain life while others fall to your blade.
}}
For the duration, any melee weapon you wield is bathed in a twisting vortex of white flames and black lightning. As part of the action used to cast this spell, make a melee spell attack or a melee weapon attack against a creature you can reach. On a hit, the target takes 3d8 necrotic damage, and you gain {{5e|Temporary Hit Points}} equal to half the damage dealt. On each of your turns for the duration, you can use your action to make this attack again.
