Talk:Nunchaku (5e Equipment)

Firstly, I don't know if you intend this to work with monks or not (they aren't proficient in martial weapons). Secondly, the fighter example is incorrect because I think you've confused the attack Action with actual attacks (read the wording of Extra Attack, Action Surge and Two-weapon Fighting). Thirdly, the game has systems in place to stop escalating numbers of attacks, e.g. note how two-weapon fighting not just gives you an extra attack but uses up a bonus action. 16 x 1d4 attacks might seem okay at high level, but it starts getting silly when you factor in magic weapon bonuses/effects and you get a critical hit nearly every turn. Fourthly, it's not consistent with other weapons, this kind of thing would be a result of special training rather than inherent to the weapon. Marasmusine (talk) 02:50, 17 July 2015 (MDT)

(((im not sure if this is the format to issue a response, or discussion, but its the tab that i selected and its the closest thing i could find)))

logic for previous entry:

I'm looking to add a unique property to the weapon, to distinguish it from others. The 'extra attack dice' would be to simulate a spinning stick, allowing for extra attack. I was thinking making it a 2d4 for damage, but that says a 'harder hit' vs a 'second spin'. Each swing would have to make its own attack roll to hit.

First part: I was thinking of this weapon to be used by any character proficient in dual weilding martial weapons, regardless of base class. I'm using a fighter with the Two Weapon fighting style.

Second part: the differnce in 'Attack action vs actual attack' -- this part i might need you to elaborate, because i have gone over it a few times, and i am a little confused. I think you are saying that the fighter getting a +1 attack (at level 5) = a dual attack, plus one attack = 3 attacks. I'm pretty sure this is what you mean... which makes a lot of sense, but it really weakens the Dual attack fighting style. Maybe you are right, and having a new full attack would be overpowered, (my character is still only level 4, so i havent had any time seeing how it plays out... the more i think about it, the more im starting to agree with you).

Third part: Even as i was writing it out, it did seem like a shit ton of rolls were going to be made, and it was starting to look like a game of shadowrun vs DnD. (even though the info in part two would trim down those number of attacks)

Fourth part: I do agree that having a 'double to attack' (or however it should be said) is too far off from the other regular non-magical weapons. I think that you might have a very interesting point, in that perhaps that effect could be better suited to a special training-- or perhaps even something out of a new class entirely.

SO!

Thank you for taking the time to write on this subject, all you notes make a lot of sense, and i can see how in depth you follow balance. I think i will try to accomplish that result by making a new class entirely ( i hope to see any input you might have when that time comes, overbalanced classes are boring and break the game).

Just to quickly clarify attack / Attack Action. On your turn you can take one action. That action can be an "Attack action" (p. 192). This lets you make one attack. The fighter has something called "Extra Attack" - when you take the Attack action, you make two attacks instead of once. When you are fighting with two light weapons and you use the Attack action, you can then use your bonus action to make another attack.
So when this says "In a single action you may execute 2 attacks with each nunchaku you wield", what happens? (with a fighter with 1 extra attack for example): You take the attack action. I make two attacks with one nunchaku from Extra Attack. The special rules doesn't do anything to that, I'm already getting two attacks. The special rule then lets me make two attacks with the second nunchaku. Then I use my bonus action to attack with the second nunchaku. That's five attacks.
Perhaps what we're looking at is a feat (a human can take it at 1st level, otherwise you get it at 4th) that lets you do some neat stuff with a nunchaku. No equipment page is needed for this, the PHB says we can use the club statistics for a nunchaku. Marasmusine (talk) 13:04, 26 July 2015 (MDT)
