Quarters are known for their nobility of spirit and devotion to their chosen lord or lady. Their trust is hard to earn, but once earned their faith is virtually unbreakable. Quarters value hard work and honesty above most things, and beyond the need of monetary gains as a means of survival, they place little or no value on material goods. Very few Quarters are playful or deceitful. Among Humans, Quarter warriors are often jokingly referred to as Ant Lions, an epithet which many wear with an odd kind of pride. Quarters are particularly disdainful of Human children, but rarely are openly disrespectful toward anyone or anything that has not earned that disrespect. They are often seen as standoffish or brooding, even aloof, but are exceptionally attentive of their charges.

Physical Description[edit]

As the name indicates, Quarters (in reference to the perception that they are one forth normal human size) are quite small. Their full adult height ranges from 18 to 24 inches, with anything over 24 inches being seen as abnormally tall. Their height to weight ratio is about the same as full size humans (about two pounds per vertical inch), making their average weight about 44 pounds. Their small size limits their physical strength, but Quarters are known for their heartiness of constitution. Nizkisja live comparatively short lives, reaching full adulthood by age 14-16. It is rare that they live longer than 40.

Quarters are exceedingly leery of all races of medium size or larger, including normal humans. They tend to be fairly quiet which leads many to the mistaken conclusion that they are unintelligent. In addition to being leery of large races, they also have fairly unhealthy disdain for halflings which stems from often being mistaken for halflings. In company of their own, Nizkisja are as jovial and bright-spirited as any human group. All Quarters hate and fear dogs of all breeds because of their small size relative to most breeds. This disparity makes many dogs (even domestic breeds) look upon Quarters as potential prey. Many dislike all domestic animals for similar reasons, including those that would be prey animals if not domesticated.

Quarters are usually Lawful Good or Lawful Evil alignments, and rarely Lawful Neutral

Quarters are comfortable in any place a normal human may be comfortable. In civilized locales, they prefer large, well-lit rooms ideally with a roaring fire and plenty of spiced meat or pickled vegetables. While traveling or adventuring in forested areas they prefer to climb trees and sleep in branches a modest distance from the ground, otherwise they are perfectly comfortable most anywhere. Nizkisja history indicates that they are from Orlil, one of the three islands than make up Lantan. Aside from that, their cultural history is abnormally vague. Some scholars are of the belief that Quarters may actually have originated as homunculi or perhaps some other alchemical or magical source.

Though not widely discussed, many Quarters do not worship any gods. Those that do, either have had a direct experience with the Divine (such as witnessing a miracle), or worship Bahamut, Torm (lawful/good), Bane or Tiamat (lawful/evil). This worship is independent of class (meaning non-cleric classes may worship too). Religion is a very private subject for Quarters. Most are entirely unwilling to speak or be spoken to on the subject, even among other devout of their faith.
