Fire Absorbtion. When the Pyrestone Mutant would take fire damage, it instead regains health equal to the damage it would’ve taken.

Hive Regeneration. The Pyrestone Mutant regains 10 hitpoints at the start of it’s turn. This feature does not take effect until the start of it’s next turn if it takes cold damage.

ACTIONS

Maul. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) bludgeoning and 10 (5d4) fire damage.


Given animation through bizarre means, the Pyrestone Mutant is a good example of mistakes made by earlier settlers. Incorrectly named, the Obscurae Ignivarae is not a living creature, or an animal of any kind really. Made up of massive clumps of fireworm hives in a rough humanoid shape, it dauntlessly protects the Pyrestone and the surrounding area.

Brown and orange rocky material makes up the body, as it forms rough limbs and features, generally nothing more than eyeholes. Not a very flexible material, the pyrestone limbs are held together by some webbing and the fireworms themselves, operating as makeshift muscles. Other than this, there’s essentially nothing to know about them. They share much more in common with golems than other living things. However, incredibly rarely within the bodies, specifically those who have been seen to split off from the Pyrestone, human bones can be found. This has only occurred a few times, and are generally too damaged to be identified, but some that were appear to be a few decades old, longer than any settler has been on the continent. Some have assumed this may be artificial aging, but it doesn’t explain everything.

One curious thing about fireworm hives is their hypersensitivity to temperature, in a very strange way. While under any form of heat, the hard material expands and regrows quickly, and somehow still manages to maintain its durability. No amount of heat has appeared to be enough to cause the material to explode either, strangely enough. However, this goes in the opposite direction too. When in cooler environments, the nests seem to almost completely disintegrate. This is almost always caused by external sources, as fireworms already exert enough heat to cause them to slowly expand on their own, and large nests, like the Pyrestone, seem to be situated on top of hot springs and other similar vents.

The creation of Pyrestone Mutants is believed to be an evolutionary choice, as fireworms generally don’t stray too far from the easily defendable hives. So, it only makes sense to bring the hives with them, while attempting to procure food. While they generally only feed on plants and minerals on the ground, the large humanoid figures have assisted in giving them some larger meals. This generally goes as planned, if the intended target doesn’t run away first. Even if the prey has the means to fight back, the worms are too slow to work as a proper team and run away, so they almost never back down from fights either.
