For example, special senses like tremorsense and blindsight, infinite ranged telepathy, flat bonus to attack and damage rolls, miscellaneous traits, Hive restoration is stronger than the recovery downtime option and it only takes a night to do, AC calculated based off your Strength modifier(consider what happens when you don a giants belt and how little sense adding strength makes). Overall requires more work from a mechanical perspective to better compare and integrate with the first party content. Physical Description[edit]

Pren are well known for their morphing abilities. Their body is formed of many multipurpose muscle strings, that have the ability to change their composition. This body is a collective intelligence, so refers to itself as “we or us”. Each of the individual strings is a stem cell-like all purpose muscle, brain and bone all in one. This means they can rearrange their bodies at will, changing into any shape. They can change their appearance to look like any race or individual, but rarely do so deceive others. However, this process uses a lot of energy, so they try and stay in a single form most of the time. The more string segments connected together, the stronger and more intelligent the whole body is, and any injuries to the body do not put the whole body at risk, so if the full body takes critical damage it can recover via putting itself into a Stasis. However, the collective intelligence and strength starts to decrease at around 7ft, as the communication between the string segments takes too long and decreases reaction times. The only exception to this is the miles of underground connective networks of Pren that form a huge hive mind. Pren spend a lot of their time in their underground cities, towns and tunnels, some believe that go deep under a lot of the world’s established nations. It’s unknown how many Pren lie in the underground networks, and how extensive they are, however the Pren that live on the surface and interact with the other races tend to be individual collective beings rather than the underground networks of Pren string segments. They are most similar to humans in body anatomy and temperament, but cannot “die” in the traditional sense unless their body is separated from other pren from extended periods of time, or all the strings in their bodies are completely destroyed. For this reason they do not age, their string segments die off and get replaced, and never become weaker, so they only die from outside sources like disease, accidents or in battle. Some other races find them vulgar, but they are tolerated by most.


It's said that Pren are the essence of the world itself. Their networks extend deep into the earth many believe this was their origin. Many of the Pren throughout the world emerged from caves and dungeons, the network of Pren strings has only ever been seen by other Pren and subterranean races due to it's depth. Many people of the surface believe it to be myth. It's not known why the first Pren separated from their mother-network, they do not even know themselves. Some small communities have been formed of Pren individuals, but not enough to have a comprehensive history. They often find themselves integrated into other race's societies, due to their shapeshifting abilities.


Pren often find the concepts of names confusing, as they have a fluid concept of the self. However Pren that are integrated into other societies, and those that are not connected to the underground have a slightly more solid concept of self, allowing for names. Because of their biology they are sexless, genderless and ageless.

Pren Names[edit]

Pren do not really have their own culture, and thus often borrow their names from other races.

Pren Traits[edit]

The Pren are a race of earth burrowers. While they can be called a race, they are a collection of vermiform strings, forming into a single entity. Their adaptive body allows for morphing, and eventually shapeshifting. Unless killed instantly, pren also have the ability to revive themselves.
Ability Score Increase. Two ability scores of your choice each increase by 1
Age. Pren do not age, but after a century or so the strings in their body begin to die faster than they can be replenished. They can choose to rejoin a Pren hive, or they eventually die.
Alignment. Pren tend toward no particular alignment. The best and the worst are found among them.
Size. Pren in their unmorphed form are identical in size to Humans. Barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. Regardless of your position in that range, your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Hive restoration. When you come into contact with a Pren Hive, you may connect part of your being to it. This has the effect of restoring all of your hit points, each night you spend connected to the Hive you gain one of the following effects. Each night You use this ability, the same number of nights following you use the Vivid dreams ability.

  • End one effect that charmed or petrified you.
  • End any reduction to one ability score.
  • End one effect reducing hit point maximum.
  • Set temporary hit points equal to the PC level
  • Advantage on the next 2 ability checks

Vivid dreams. Your home hive attempts to regain control over your mind, reaching you through your dreams. At the end of a long rest, make a charisma check vs a DC of 22. If you fail, roll 1d20 and apply the relevant effects:

  • 1-4 You are obsessed with dirt. while you are sleeping you dig a hole with your bare hands, as wide and as deep as you can make it. If you have the Digger abilities your hole is around 10 times bigger.
  • 5-8 You want to horde things. While you sleep you steal as much of your party's equipment as you can, and raid all the surronding areas until you get caught or wake up.
  • 9-12 You lose control over your morphing abilities, you fling your limbs around smashing into anything near you, dealing 1d8 damage to anything you hit.
  • 13-16 Scared, you run as far as you can from the party while you sleep. You run (your CON modifier) number of d20 miles until you collapse and wake up, unless someone catches you before then.
  • 17-20 You immediately awake, but you believe you are someone else. Your mind tries to create a story of what you do for a living based on your surroundings, and you try your best to fulfil this story until the end of the long rest.

Hive influence. Where the drives of the character come in conflict with the Hive, you might consider awarding inspiration to the character for acting against their personal interests and instead engaging with their Pren nature. Depending on the player in question or how your group plays the game, this incentive may not be necessary, or you might offer the inspiration ahead of time to remind the player of their character's nature.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
Subrace. As a Pren you have a natural propensity to morph and adapt in a certain way, which is often linked to the nature of the hive which you were born from. Some Pren who wish to gain further mastery over their bodies can later learn more of these abilities. Choose one from the following 4 subraces.


Worm form. You have Burrowing and tremorsense 20ft. You cannot borrow through solid rock.
Language. You speak undercommon


Water form. You adapt your body to an aquatic environment, sprouting gills and growing webbing between your fingers. You can breathe underwater and gain a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
Aquatic telepathy. You can communicate with small and medium aquatic creatures via telepathy


Natural Weapons. You grow claws, fangs, spines, horns, or a different natural weapon of your choice. Your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, as appropriate to the natural weapon you chose, and you are proficient with your unarmed strikes. Finally, you have a +1 bonus to the attack and damage rolls you make using it.
Skin morphing. While wearing no armour, you can morph your skin to be as hard as iron. Your AC is 12 + STR modifier.


Morphing. As an action, you can polymorph into any humanoid of your size that you have seen, or back into your true from. However, your equipment does not change with you. If you die, you revert to your true form. You retain all of your normal statistics while in this form. You may use this feature once without issue, however, additional uses after the first incur one level of exhaustion. You must complete a long rest to use this trait again without issue.
Preferred form. Most Pren that can morph prefer to stay as one race, to more easily blend in with society. You know one extra language of your choice, usually matching your preferred form.
