Physical Description[edit]

Baba Yaga, a monster that takes away children that misbehave. Art credit Midori Snyder

Monsters vary widely in shape, size, color, etc. and have no set appearance whatsoever, but tend to be created in an image designed to scare children, like a giant lizard, or a hag with a house made of chicken legs.

History[edit]

Monsters are creatures created by an ancient ritual, almost as old as scary stories themselves, horrific and destructive by design. They follow a specific set of rules based off of what the creator of the monster wanted, such as a demonic beast to guard their treasure, or a pale, slender figure to track down children who run away from home, and make sure they never want to leave again. They are rarely used as soldiers, as the ritual is extremely expensive and time consuming, making the mass production of monsters virtually impossible. Monsters are notably able to be created to be capable of natural reproduction, although these ones are known to pick up unpredictable adaptations within two to three generations. It is theorized that they are where most evil creatures without a definite origin, like Kua Toa, many goblinoids, and Illithids, come from, although this theory has very little factual grounding.

Society[edit]

Monsters as a general rule are sociopathic horrors that lurk in abandoned buildings, spooky woods, and graveyards. They don't have much in the way of society, but they can be created to serve societal roles, such as watching over a daycare, or being a doctor.

<Race Name> Names[edit]

Monster names are based entirely on what their master wanted to name them, generally related to what they do or how they look. Later generations or reproductive monsters tend to keep the style of naming the originals had.
