They thought us dead, slaughtered by their "masters". Well we are not dead, we are all around them, and we will not rest until every last one is gone.
—Amathas Bloodrend, a war troll kas'maeyta

It is told in secret texts, that when the Temple of Nine Swords fell the Shadow Master had survived, kept alive by a handful of great warriors, the feral Kas'Maeyta, powerful hunters and warriors of the Tiger Lord. For their help, the Shadow Master instructed these few warriors on the Way of Shadow, molding them into his own personal assassins.

Becoming a Kas'Maeyta[edit]

Nowadays, the only way to learn the way of the Kas'Maeyta is to either learn from a current practitioner, or to somehow uncover the secret tomes that teach of the union of the Shadow Hand and Tiger Claw disciplines.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Kas'Maeyta.

Maneuvers: At each level odd-numbered level, you gain a new maneuver known from either the Shadow Hand, or Tiger claw discipline. You must meet a maneuver's prerequisite to learn it. You add your full Kas'Maeyta level to your initiator level to determine your total initiator level and your highest-level maneuvers known. At 3rd, 6th, and 9th level, you gain an additional maneuver readied per day.

Ambush (Ex): The Kas'Maeyta are often known as the Hidden, or the Beasts in the Night, and for good reason. If the Kas'Maeyta studies his victim for 3 rounds and then makes a sneak attack with a natural weapon that successfully deals damage, the sneak attack has the additional effect of possibly either paralyzing or killing the target (the Kas'Maeyta’s choice). While studying the victim, the Kas'Maeyta can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target and the target does not detect the Kas'Maeyta or recognize the Kas'Maeyta as an enemy. If the victim of such an attack fails a Fortitude save (DC 10 + the Kas'Maeyta’s class level + the Kas'Maeyta’s Wis modifier) against the kill effect, she dies. If the saving throw fails against the paralysis effect, the victim is rendered helpless and unable to act for 1d6 rounds plus 1 round per level of the Kas'Maeyta. If the victim’s saving throw succeeds, the attack is just a normal sneak attack. Once the Kas'Maeyta has completed the 3 rounds of study, he must make the ambush within the next 3 rounds.

If a ambush is attempted and fails (the victim makes her save) or if the Kas'Maeyta does not launch the attack within 3 rounds of completing the study, 3 new rounds of study are required before he can attempt another ambush.

Sneak Attack: This is exactly like the rogue ability of the same name. The extra damage dealt increases by +1d6 every odd level (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th). If the Kas'Maeyta gets a sneak attack bonus from another source the bonuses on damage stack.

Talons of Darkness (Ex): The teachings of the Kas'Maeyta puts great emphasis on the power of the body, and the belief that a Kas'Maeyta's claws or fangs are it's greatest weapons. Beginning at 1st level, the Kas'Maeyta gains a number of benefits when he wields only his natural attacks in combat.

Disciplined Claws(Ex): At 1st level, the Kas'Maeyta may choose one set of it's natural attacks, he may now treat these as associated weapons for both the Shadow Hand and Tiger Claw disciplines, these are now known as his chosen weapons.

Feral Claws(Ex): At 3rd level, the Kas'Maeyta chosen weapons gain an increase in damage, as if he had taken the Improved Natural Attack feat.

Battle-honed Claws(Ex): At 5th level, the threat range of the Kas'Maeyta's chosen weapon doubles, this does not stack with other effects that increase a weapons threat range, such as Improved Critical.

Reciprocating Claws(Ex): At 7th level, when a Kas'Maeyta makes a full attack with his chosen weapons, he gains an additional attack with each one at -5 penalty.

Greater Feral Claws(Ex): At 9th level, the Kas'Maeyta's chosen weapons gain an additional increase in damage, as shown on the Improved Natural Attack table.

Inside the Shadow's Embrace (Su): The Kas'Maeyta's most feared ability is the ability to disappear anywhere, whether in a forest, or a crowd of people. At 6th level, an Kas'Maeyta can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as he is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, the Kas'Maeyta can hide himself from view in the open without having anything to actually hide behind.

Swift Stalker (Ex): As part of their training by the great master of the Tiger Claw discipline, the Kas'Maeyta must prove themselves constantly as great hunters, a path that they continued under the tutoring of the Shadow Master. At 4th level, the Kas'Maeyta takes no penalties for using the Hide skill or following tracks while moving at their full speed. However, when moving twice their speed or faster, they take a -10 penalty to Hide checks, and Survival checks when following tracks.

Stance of Shadow Fangs (Ex): The true merging of two disciplines, the Kas'Maeyta are taught over the course of many years the way to conjoin the mindsets inherent to both, becoming a true master of both. At 10th level, the Kas'Maeyta may have two stances active simultaneously, provided one is of the Shadow Hand discipline, and the other is of the Tiger claw discipline. When the Kas'Maeyta uses a swift action to initiate or change their stance, they can initiate or change one or both. In addition, when the Kas'Maeyta is in a stance from both disciplines, they gain a bonus on Hide, Move Silently, and Survival checks equal to the Kas'Maeyta's Wisdom modifier (if any).

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Kas'Maeyta[edit]

The Kas'Maeyta are, as a rule, hunters, usually found either in alone, or in small groups in pursuit of their prey, whoever or whatever it may be

Combat: A Kas'Maeyta is little more than a (sometimes only slightly) intelligent predator, albeit with a lot of training, which of course only serves to make them into even better predators. A Kas'Maeyta's most common tactic is simple: hide from their prey, then ambush them at the last moment.

Advancement: Kas'Maeytae are better off continuing down the path of the martial adept, although anything that enhances their ability to stalk their prey better is highly desirable. The Kas'Maeyta would be best off taking feats like Darkstalker LoM, Improved Natural Attack and Endurance.

Resources: In hidden places in the world, there are small secretive groups of Kas'Maeytae, each of which most closely resembles some sort of strange assassin guild. These groups are all relatively friendly towards each other, and as a rule they will aid any Kas'Maeyta with no need for recompense, provided the situation isn't too severe. In times when large numbers of Kas'Maeytae are needed, they will gather in a secret location. Known as the Blood Grove, this hidden meeting place is believed to be the original training grounds of the Kas'Maeyta.

Kas'Maeytae in the World[edit]

The place was an absolute mess, some sick fuck had taken Sir Gustan and nailed him upside down on a tree, then slowly cut him apart with his own sword. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, he was still alive, screaming about some lizard man
—Thanilief Ssalm'ilois, an elven ranger reporting the unsuccessful recovery of a crusader of Heironeous

With their original master's defeat at the hands of the seven masters that made up the Temple of Nine Swords, the Kas'Maeyta adopted the badly wounded Shadow Master as their liege, protecting him in exchange for the secrets of the darker side of the Sublime Way. Some years later, he met his end by the sword of a man who claimed to be the Stone Lord, but it's believed that he was in fact a banished Kas'Maeyta.

Today, the small Kas'Maeytae hunting parties are each led by the best warrior among them, which means that this person may vary day by day. Joining the Kas'Maeyta is actually relatively easy, since they accept anyone who meets the requirements, regardless of moral outlook, gender, or species. One hunting party may consist of trolls, mindflayers, lizardfolk, lamias, even unicorns, all of which may get along quite well together sometimes. As part of their training, the Kas'Maeyta are taught to identify and destroy martial adepts who aren't of either of their chosen disciplines, a fact that has earned them many enemies over the years. An individual Kas'Maeyta may focus this training however he sees fit, only hunting evil martial adepts, martial adepts of a specific discipline, or perhaps hunting all martial adepts who aren't Kas'Maeyta (or sometimes martial adepts who are Kas'Maeyta as well).

NPC Reactions: If a Kas'Maeyta reveals himself to anyone else, they rarely, if ever reveal their status as a Kas'Maeyta, although a few exceptions might occur. In general, they treat the hunters with a mixture of terror and respect, then they usually try running into the hills.

Kas'Maeyta Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Martial Lore can research Kas'Maeytae to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Martial Lore
DC Result
11 Kas'Maeytae are bestial assassins who hunt down great warriors.
16 The Kas'Maeytae use only their natural born weapons in combat, and they do so with great precision and skill.
21 The last remnants of the ancient Shadow Tiger army, the Kas'Maeytae were once trained by the Tiger Lord, than later by the great Shadow Master, the infamous master of the Shadow Hand discipline.
26 Characters who get this result can know the names and locations of specific Kas'Maeytae and items related to them.
