Kaleidoscope (5e Race)

Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: Transcendance is incredibly awkward, breaking 5e precedents at all opportunities. Parties aren’t a thing, nor are battles, instant death for enemies is broken as possible, as is permanent stat bonuses.

Stub Logo.png This page is incomplete and/or lacking flavor. Reason: As it stands, the race itself is beyond strangely put together. For such a weird creature, they are absolutely unaffected by their shape, and can wear normal armor and weapons like anyone else. While I like beholders as much as the next guy, they absolutely would not function like this. Transcendance does not help with this situation.

Kaleidoscope[edit]

Come take a look into the eye of destiny, see the monster you really are...
—Unknown

Physical Description[edit]

They are essentially gigantic eyeballs, not too different from gazers or beholders. Their main eye is covered by a stone-hard skin. This skin is often a light purple color, although it can be bright red or even dark green. This skin can also have patterns such as triangles or hexagons. They have 4 to 16 tentacles sprouting from their skin, depending on their age. Near the entrance into the eye, there are two "eyelids" lined with extremely sharp teeth, strong enough to crush bone. Their tentacles similarly have this feature.

History[edit]

Kaleidoscopes are ancient and mysterious beings, created from the remnants of pure magic in the elemental plane. Named after their strange and twisted structure, their exact origin is hazy, but they are known to be very knowledgeable creatures, possibly knowledge from celestial creatures. They are able to fly and levitate in midair. They cannot speak verbally due to the room the eye makes, so they communicate telepathically directly to minds. They also are known to be fiercely dedicated to magic, more so that most other elementals like them, leading to them being able to cast all forms of it. However, their general magic capacity is slightly smaller than most.

Society[edit]

Kaleidoscopes are oft friendly towards each other, unless provoked, as well as fellow elementals as well as celestials. However, they disgust at the sight of perceived impure races, specifically oozes and undead. In fact, they often attack them on sight, unless the ooze or undead is known to be a servant or friend to their kind. They get along neutrally with the other races, but if they are attacked, they will give no quarter...

Kaleidoscope Names[edit]

Male: Male names always start with the prefix "Ae". They usually have a dominant R in the middle of it.

Examples: Aeoran, Aekern, Aedaran, Aemorian, Aeraek

Female: Female names always end with the suffix "Or". They sometimes also have R's in their names, albeit less prevalent. Their names oft start with feminine letters like L or A.

Examples: Jaraor, Layor, Aelenor, Ulaor, Paelor

Kaleidoscope Traits[edit]

Elemental eye creatures, created by wisps of pure magic.
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score increases by 1. Your Constitution score decreases by 1.
Age. They can live naturally for almost 300 years. They reach full maturity at 40 years old.
Alignment. Almost all kaleidoscopes lean evil in alignment, most commonly lawful evil.
Size. Kaleidoscopes can range from a 30 foot to 90 foot diameter. However, they are always medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet, and your base flying/levitating speed is 15 feet
You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray..
Transcendence. You may occasionally obtain Transcendence. This can happen in two ways:

Dealing damage to an enemy such as that they would have exactly half of their health remaining:If this happens, Transcendence will automatically activate.

Being the last alive member of the party during a battle: If this is the case, you must make a DC 10 Intelligence save to activate Transcendence, otherwise it will not trigger.

Once Transcendence is activated, it will last for 2 minutes, until an ally uses an action to terminate it using a DC 12 Constitution check, or if Shadows into Light is used. While in Transcendence, you cannot be killed (although you can be significantly hurt and be at a disadvantage when Transcendence runs out), you gain temporary health points equal to your level times 4 (hp + [l * 4]) and all your ability scores except Intelligence will gain 1 point. You also gain a new move called Shadows into Light. If you use this, 1 fallen ally will be revived, you and that ally gains 3 Charisma points, and all enemies will be killed and the battle will end. However, this will automatically terminate Transcendence, and you will contract a random disease if your Intelligence score is below 5.
Languages. When dealing with other races they oft use Undercommon or Deep Speech. When speaking to their own kind and other elementals, they use Primordial.
