Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: Breaks bounded accuracy by giving a free +2 to your spell save DC and spell attack rolls. Granting a class feature especially unarmored defense as a racial trait isn't a good idea due to 5e being designed around any race being able to play any class and it being a very powerful trait to give in addition to the already very powerful kit this race has. The beast within seems to be from the currently overpowered Laguz_(5e_Race) but the page doesn't link to or have any subraces. So you sing to use seid magic then why does it have a range of touch? 30 feet of flying all at level 1 can be 80% of what a race gets and here it is dwarfed in comparison to other strong features see the Aarakocra. Overall this race receives a number of strong and broken features that could function as the primary features of a normal race. Please read the 5e Race Design Guide and the relevant sections of the Dungeon Masters Guide before creating races on the wiki or consider reading some of DnD_Guidelines.

Heron Laguz[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Herons appear to be gorgeous humans with blond(e) hair and snowy Heron wings. They stand about the height of a taller human, and tend towards slim. They are not normally muscular, but can be, given the proper time.

History[edit]

Not much is Known about Heron History, as they were reclusive in the Serenes forest and were nearly annihilated several decades ago. It is known, however, that they were, are, and will forever be advocates of peace. Some have gone to war, however, but never touched a weapon. They were framed for the assassination of a well liked apostle of the goddess Ashera by the senate of that apostle's country, and as a result are now legendary, they are so scarce.

Society[edit]

Little is known about current Heron society, due to its total of 4 members, one of whom is bedridden, and little is said of their old one, as a cultural taboo surrounds it. Herons are a peace loving race who lived in harmony with the beasts of the forest. They champion peace, and as a result are never actually prepared for war. They do not enjoy exerting themselves, and live off the land, never damaging nature.

Heron Names[edit]

Not many Heron names are known due to their near extinction.

Male: Reyson, Rafiel

Female: Leanne

Heron Traits[edit]

Gentle Souls who wish only for peace, but wield powerful magic.
Ability Score Increase. +3 divided among Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.
Age. Herons can live up to 1000 years
Alignment. Herons are always good, and never chaotic.
Size. Herons stand between 5 and 6 feet tall, and are well built. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Seid Magic. You have the only magic encouraged among laguz, seid magic. You can sing your magic as an action on your turn. You start with two; Vigor and one other. Said magic has a range of touch, and you CANNOT target yourself. You may use Seid Magic a number of times per long rest equal to your Proficiency. You regain all spent uses when you complete a long rest.
Laguz Vulnerabilities. Because of your fragile avian bones, you are vulnerable to force damage.
Herons Choice. The thought of touching a weapon is repugnant to any heron. You are, however proficient in magic. You may choose one cantrip of your choice from the wizard, sorcerer, or cleric spell list.
Keen Smell. As an action, you may sense any item that would leave a distinct smell within 10 ft, so long as it is not behind total cover. If you would sense a creature, you can only identify race, not location or identity.
The Beast Within. As a bonus action, you may channel the raw, primal energy of your ancestry. If you do, you shift (change into your Heron form from your bipedal form) into a massive beast (determined and detailed by your subrace). When you shift, your gear changes with your body into your bestial form (you cannot access items stored on your person while you are in your beast form). You may stay shifted for a maximum number of minutes equal to 2 times your Constitution Modifier (minimum 30 seconds). You may shift a number of times equal to your level per long rest. When you revert (return to your bipedal form) you cannot shift for 2 minutes. You may revert before the time is up by using a bonus action on your turn.
Natural Armor. While shifted, you have a natural armor of 10 + your Dexterity + Constitution modifiers. You cannot have any form of armor on for this to take effect.
Transform. When you transform, you change into a Man-sized heron.
Languages. Common and one other of your choice.

Seid Magic[edit]

Vigor. Target ally may move 15 ft. or take an additional action at the end of your turn.
Bliss. Target ally gains advantage on his/her next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.
Sorrow. Target enemy gains disadvantage on his/her next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.
