Grogolthans[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

The Grogolthans are a race that are descended from crossbreeds between elves and trolls. They have fairly extreme sexual dimorphism, with one gender being huge and burly, and the other being lithe and graceful. The males of the species resemble elves, albeit much shorter, and with somewhat disproportionately long arms. The females look different enough from the males that they are often mistaken for a completely different species; they are huge and muscular, with pointed jaws, sharp tusks, and very hairy limbs. Both the males and the females have green amphibian-like skin, and bright, shaggy, multicolored hair.

History[edit]

The grogolthan race was created a long time ago. A colony of elven nomads settled near a tribe of swamp-dwelling trolls. Trading between them was bountiful, and over generations, cultural exchange flourished. The culture of the elven colony grew to be quite different than that of other colonies, as interspecies romances arose. The first elf-troll hybrids were very different from modern day grogolthans, but over time, the cultures fused, the populations become more homogeneous, and the hybrids evolved over millennia together. Nowadays, they primarily live in one major, industrious city in the swamp where the grogolthan race was born.

Society[edit]

Grogolthans primarily live in one city: Grogoltha. It is a massive and complex metropolis built on top of a swamp that has been artificially extended as the city grew in size. Roads are thick, wooden boardwalks raised above the swampy ground, and in the absence of solid foundations, buildings are built using the massive naturally-occurring trees as supports. The swampy land is used for farming fruits and vegetables, and grogolthans have domesticated several large species of frogs and amphibians and bred them to large sizes. They pride themselves on architectural stone-carving, often decorating every last inch of masonry with geometric artwork depicting historical events, religious occurrences, or their present society.

Grogolthans have a very matriarchal society. The women of their race have a much higher standing in society than their men. All the leaders in grogolthan society are invariably female. Even amongst more menial jobs, such as construction or farming, it is far more often that the overseers and managers will be women. Nobles often keep attractive male servants to serve them and entertain guests. Similarly, gender roles are harshly enforced: men must "know their place", and it is considered shameful for a woman to be weak. Naturally, the toxicity of their society takes its toll not just on men, but also on women who do not fit with their society's notions on femininity. It should be noted that this isn't a complete reversal of gender roles compared to a patriarchial society; women focus on raising children far more than men do, and whenever the race goes to war, able-bodied men are drafted as soldiers alongside the female volunteers.

A race with extreme sexual dimorphism: one gender is huge and burly, the other lithe and beautiful.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 2.
Age. Grogolthans age and mature much slower than humans, reaching adulthood by 30 and living to be 400 years old on average.
Alignment.
Size. Male Grogolthans are slightly shorter than humans, around 5 feet tall with few shorter. Female Grogolthans are much larger than the males, between 7 to 8 feet tall.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Troll Regeneration. You have a pool of regeneration points equal to twice your character level. As a bonus action, you can regenerate hit points up to the result of a 1d6 die roll or your remaining regeneration points; whichever is lower. After doing so, your regeneration points are reduced by the amount you healed by. Your regeneration points are fully restored whenever you take a long rest. In addition, you regenerate any missing limbs during a long rest, or you can reattach any missing limbs instantly.
Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write in both Common and Sylvan.
Subrace. Male and female grogolthans look different enough to the point where many mistake them for being two separate species. Despite their extreme sexual dimorphism, there are Grogolthans that lean towards androgyny. You may pick between the Male, Female, or Androgyne Grogolthan subrace.

Male Grogolthan[edit]

Soothing Presence. As an action, you can calm the emotions of any willing creature you can see. If the creature is unwilling, it must succeed a Charisma saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your Charisma + your proficiency bonus. Once you use this ability against an unwilling creature, you may no longer use this feature. You regain allow expanded uses when you complete a long rest.
Enhanced Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet.

Claws. Your claws are a natural unarmed weapon, which deal 1d6 slashing damage on a hit.
Enlongated Limbs. You have disproportionately long and lanky arms. When you make a melee attack, you may choose to use the full reach of your limbs to attack. When doing so, you increase your reach by 5 ft, but you reduce your weapon's damage roll by one die category (d12 -> d10 -> d8 etc)

Androgyne Grogolthan[edit]

Even though there are extreme differences between male and female grogolthans, their appearance and biology is still ultimately dictated by their hormonal balance. Just like humans, sex and gender amongst grogolthans is a spectrum. There are just as many Grogolthans amongst the various levels of androgyny as there are humans.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Elongated Limbs. You have disproportionately long and lanky arms. When you make a melee attack, you may choose to use the full reach of your limbs to attack. When doing so, you increase your reach by 5 feet, but you reduce your weapon's damage roll by one die category (d12 -> d10 -> d8 etc)
Innate Balance. You have advantage on saving throws against falling prone. You are proficient in Acrobatics.
