The Banjo was created by the Drow, so that explains it's scarcity. however, since it was created by an underground race to be played under ground, when attempting to play a banjo in an enclosed space with walls and a ceiling of stone, you get +2 to a perform check, subsequently, when played in open air, you get a -2 to a perform check.
