Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: This race seems overpowered compared to similar first-party races and would benefit from having less powerful traits. For example, flat bonuses/ detriments, X number of uses, damage for existing, potentially knowing all languages, flat damage reduction, at will shadow teleport (shadow monk feature), class features as racial traits, etc. Overall requires more work from a mechanical perspective to better compare and integrate with the first party content. Aragami[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

Aragami are spirits, shades of the lost who inhabit the border between worlds. Aragami usually take the form of a humanoid, typically male. This form has black skin and is partially translucent, apart from a pair of glowing white eyes that are permanently glowering. Their faces are flat and featureless, tapering down to smooth skin where their mouth would be, and having only a bump in place of a nose. While humanoid, they appear athletic and somewhat muscular. Most aragami will wear long strips of cloth, woven together to form a garment like the robes of an assassin or ninja.

History[edit]

An aragami is a vengeful spirit, often summoned to help someone in trouble, but they can also leave their body in their final moments to seek revenge or some other goal. Aragami are made out of magic and shadows, which means they are extremely vulnerable to light and detectable with magic. Some of them may be vengeful spirits that want to harm, destroy, and kill everything in their path while others just operate unseen or ignore you completely. It depends on who they were while they were still alive.

Society[edit]

Aragami have no real society because most of them fade away when they reach their goal, but some of them refuse to leave this world. Those individuals travel across the lands and help other aragami find their final rest. There are a few outposts where aragami meet regularly.

Aragami Names[edit]

Aragmi who left their body while dying often use their old name, but those who were summoned are usually assigned a new name by their summoner.

Male: Aragami, Hector, Graves, Geralt, Wraith

Female: Aragami, Shadow, Yuli, Loree

Aragami Traits[edit]

You are a vengeful spirit who uses and is made out of shadows.

Vengeful spirits formed from shadows that are often summoned to become assassins.
Ability Score Increase. All ability score increases are determined by your subrace.
Age. Aragami are summoned as mature adults. They do not physically age.
Alignment. Aragami are mostly true neutral but the can tend to neutral good or neutral evil depending on circumstances
Size. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Shadow embodiment. If you are exposed to bright daylight or other bright light sources you receive a -1 penalty on all rolls.
Languages. The languages you can speak, read and write depend on your subrace.
Subrace. Summoned, Bodyloss, Returned


Summoned[edit]

These aragami were summoned by mages, wizards or shady creatures using ancient rituals.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 1. Increase any other ability score 1.
Living Shadow. As long as you are in dim light you gain a +1 bonus on Stealth and Sleight of Hand rolls, this bonus increases to +2 if you are within darkness. If you are in bright daylight you are unable to use all other aragami features.
Shadow Dash. You can use your bonus action to blink to a shadow or darkness up to 35ft. The shadow must be of a non-living object.
Create Darkness. You create magical darkness in a 5ft by 5ft wide area for 2 minutes. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier after performing a long rest.
Magical Distortion. If you are exposed to bright magical light you have to make a Constitution saving throw against DC 14 every 3 minutes until you are no longer in the light. If you would be about to enter an area illuminated that way the DC changes to 17. On a failed save you take 1d4 radiant damage and are pushed 10ft away from the source.
Languages. You can speak, read, and understand all languages that your summoner knows.

Bodyloss[edit]

These aragami left their body when they died.

Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution and Wisdom ability scores increase by 1.
Shadow Body. Non-magical attacks are less effective on your shadowy form. Whenever a non-magical weapon deals bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage to you, reduce that damage by 1.
Shadow Dash. You can use your bonus action to blink to a shadow or darkness up to 35ft. The shadow must be of a non-living object.
Approaching Darkness. During the night your movement speed increases by 5ft. as long as you are not involved in combat. While you are chasing after someone/something the bonus is 10ft instead.
Languages. You can speak, read and understand all languages which you spoke before you died.

Returned[edit]

These aragami returned from their graves for various reasons. They often take the form of a 20-30-year-old human.

Ability Score Increase. Your Strength ability score increases by 2.
Shroud Dagger. You can use your action to fling a dagger created out of shadows at a creature within your direct line of sight up to 40ft. The dagger deals 1d6 necrotic damage and heals you by half of the damage dealt (rounded up). You can use this feature again after finishing a short or long rest.
Shadow Dash. You can use your bonus action to blink to a shadow or darkness up to 35ft. The shadow must be of a non-living object.
Wraith Form. You can use your bonus action to partially take on the form of a black mist cloud. As long as you are in this form you receive half damage rounded down from non-magical attacks. This effect ends after you have been hit by a non-magical attack or after 1 minute. While using this trait, you can not attack.
Siphon. You can absorb corpses by touching them, which takes up to 3 minutes and heals you by 1d4. The corpses dissolve into black mist.
Languages. You can speak, read, and understand all languages that your summoner knows.

Height and Weight[edit]

You have the same height and 3/4 of your weight you had before you died. If you are not sure which race you had before, use the random height and weight of a human.

Suggested Characteristics[edit]

When creating a Aragami character, you can use the following table of traits, ideals, bonds and flaws to help flesh out your character. Use these table in addition to or in place of your background's characteristics.
